Slay.one is yet another of literally hundreds of lazy amateur 2D retro top-down shooter/brawlers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. But this one is worse.. much worse. See, this is a free browser game that has been dumped onto Steam as a paid product by the Chinese developers. It's an attempt to scam PC gamers into paying money for a free browser game. This is not okay! Let's say you do decide to buy this even though you could get it for free by opening Chrome. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. For gameplay purposes, this is a browser game. …

Per the game's description itself: "Don't buy the game for now." An early arena game, pretty simple. Could be fun with friends, as always, but don't bother with this one. There are better games of this variety out there. Game shows in-app ads, has strange error messages, and other oddities.

It's quite fun - a kind of top down quake multiplayer, but nobody plays it and as other mentioned, it's almost a decade old web game available for free on both itchio and its own dedicated domain slay.one. You also have to register an account, which isn't convenient for a Steam user. So given you have other options, it isn't worth it to buy it here. On the other hand, it seems to be a passion project, given there are no other games from this dev and it still gets occasional updates.

So fun, can’t stop playing! Didn’t expect to love slay.one this much. The matches are quick but intense, and every game feels different. Games are like 10-15 mins so perfect for a quick session. Graphics are clean and runs well. Devs seem to care too - regular updates and they listen to feedback. If you want a competitive game that’s actually fun, definitely try this. Highly recommend!
