Sumerian Blood is a modern take on the classic Archon formula with diverse units and engaging real-time combat that keeps gameplay fresh, but it suffers from poor documentation, lack of controller support, and janky controls that hinder accessibility. Players appreciate the strategic unit variety and fun combat mechanics, though many found themselves confused about game mechanics and win conditions due to minimal in-game guidance, and the experience could be refined with tighter controls and better customization options.

Oh hey Archon, longtime no see. No, really, this game is indeed an Archon, and seems like it would have easily fit in back in the early EA days, alongside Adept and Mail Order Monsters. Sumerian Blood almost feels like a prequel to Archon. The various units are nicely diverse, the combat's fun, and it's easy enough to aim and control. You've got various units that fling spikes, bouncing arrows, homing balls, or just throw themselves explosively at enemies, so combat's going to stay fresh for awhile. That said, the game has a number of things it needs work on still. There's no controller support yet, there's next to no documentation or information in game about the various units (Or the win conditions), and there's no way I've seen to exit the game short of an Alt-F4. Also, if you're wanting to play vs the computer, I've seen no way for you to play as the second faction. You're stuck as the Light. Despite all that, I'd still recommend it as long as you have a friend to play it with. It's a great re-do of good ol' Archon. The game is fun, but know that you're going in without any instructions, info, or hints as to what to do to win. (Psst: Right Control is the attack button)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnf3BMidfPs Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh is quite the confusing game at first. It is perhaps one of those games that would be better suited with a manual, unfortunately I got it on Steam, and it didn’t come with a manual. So what attracted me to Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh? Purely and simply the fact it played on to my love of chess. At first I had expected it to be a differently pawned chess game. You know, the basilisks might be knights. And so forth. But it really is a modern reinvention of Archon. I had not been expecting that. Archon is defined by many as a cult classic, in it you control different units which all have different attributes such as speed, mode of damage, and so on and so forth, and when two units meet in the same space – well, they fight in an enclosed arena. What is really frikkin cool is that you get to control your unit. So – even if your unit is at a disadvantage – being slower, or not having a ranged attack. You still have a chance. You only need to control it yourself and maneouver it around. It’s such a simple twist, but it makes the game all that more fun. But I’m not reviewing Archon, I’m reviewing Sumerian Blood: Gilgame…

Pretty fun. Somewhat janky combat, but that's part of the appeal. I'd love to see a sequel with more options / game customization and tighter controls.
