About Quantum Conscience

Within a galaxy of terraformed planets, a secret war rages between two intergalactic agencies. One of them—ARCHON—is developing the technology to invade people’s minds. They have already tyrannized a planet called Teballai, and hope to use their mind-reading technology to spread their power across the galaxy. A second organization—FOE (Freedom Organization of Elites)—wants to destroy ARCHON’s technology in the name of freedom. When a young FOE soldier (you choose the gender) named Blaire obtains the ability to read minds from an ARCHON experiment, she finds her loyalty torn between both sides. Whether Blaire helps the enemy or defeats them depends upon your use of her power.

One of the hallmarks of the traditional visual novel is a branching story line. This is typically accomplished via choices forced on the player. In some of the most complex visual novels, there are dozens of these choices and multiple endings. I call Quantum Conscience "experimental" because it seeks to do away with these choices. Outside of the very first few minutes of the game, in which the player chooses to be a male or female protagonist and answers some questions about their background, there are no forced choices. Rather, the player character--a soldier in the far-flung future--is given the power to, at any time, read the minds of the other characters.

How often Blaire, your protagonist, uses this power is entirely up to the player. Starting from the middle of chapter one, it is almost always available, and the only way the player interacts with the story. The consequences of the knowledge Blaire gains (or doesn't) changes how Blaire acts and how other characters react to Blaire.

In Quantum Conscience you play as Protagonist#1, the same character you've seen in 2934893 other VNs. Protagonist#1 meets SideCharacter#2, #3, #4 and at the end #5, and just by looking at their design you can outright guess their "personality". After a grand plot, the heroes wander à Guardians of the Galaxy on crack. The writing style is okay, the plotline is moderately interesting. The problem are the several leaps in the story. The author puts characters in a weird tightspot (for the dramatic effect?) and then comes up with unlikely event to save them. The art is bad. One female is crooked, and I disliked the design of two of the males
they look like gender-bent cut-out from a teenager's fashion magazine
. The backgrounds are attrocious. Their "revolutionary" mind-reading mechanic is unique - but unique =/= good
insert bent fork
. Having to constantly change into the mind-reading menu to look for new lines to read is a drag. Protagonist#1 uses the information he gathers in the weirdest possible way. I'd rather have a regular VN, where I can choose if my Protagonist#1 is brain-dead or not. Achievements were fine - one for each ending - and L…

In progress review. My reviews focus on accessibility and inclusion, any criticisms are made with improvement or learning in mind. :) I've finished 2 of 4 routes, and got a non-romantic end (probably because I couldn't figure out how to romance anyone). For some reason I unlocked a bunch of romance CGs for the character I was least interested in, some of which I didn't even see in my playthrough. Although I did get a random non-graphic s*x scene with them just out of nowhere. Very odd. Accessibility +Press V for self-voicing (Screen reader / text to voice function) +Limited flashing lights (any flashing isn't very bright, is very short too). +Colour contrast for speech text is decent, -but it's terrible in the menus (grey text on grey background!) -Contrast for buttons is really, really bad. There should be a highlight but it's inconsistent within the game; aka if you want to highlight speaking to Shadow, the button goes brighter, but for every other option, it gets darker, making it unclear what you're 'pressing'. In the accessibility settings, it's just so hard to see and I think you get a dark shadow around the box you're highlighting which blends into the dark background, so…

Quantum Conscience is a bit of a strange one. It is a scifi story revolving around a mind reading ability given to the protagonist. Where most visual novels have a story that branches based on discrete dialogue choices, QC instead branches based on how much information you choose to pull from characters using the mind reading ability. The art style is nearly monochromatic, but the shades of grey fit the moral ambiguity of the story and the bleak settings so I like it.

Play it. You will like the music. You will like the art. Quality IS NOT subjective here.

I confess that the CG and even the scenarios of this game are not the most appealing but I loved the story that surrounds the game which I will not go into details. At the beginning of the game the player can make some choices, where throughout the plot the protagonist gains an ability that will give him countless possibilities leading to various endings and possible romances. I think it’s Visual Novel giving itself a chance.
