Chester One is a small indie game that focuses on a simple, character-driven experience rather than trying to provide a huge amount of content. The game has a compact feel that makes it easy to understand, and I like that it does not overload me with unnecessary systems or complicated progression. Chester One is a lively 2D action-platformer built around the idea that familiar genre mechanics can become much more entertaining when surrounded by eccentric characters, constantly changing artwork, collectibles, and a healthy amount of nonsense. Developed and published by Brilliant Blue-G, LLC, it has the recognizable foundations of an old-school platforming adventure while deliberately avoiding a predictable presentation. The story establishes the game's attitude immediately: reality is falling apart, different universes are colliding, and Chester is particularly concerned about his stolen cupcakes. It is a deliberately ridiculous motivation that suits an adventure more interested in playful creativity than serious storytelling. The campaign contains 40 levels spread across seven planets, providing a substantial collection of environments to navigate. Running, jumping, attacking enemies, avoiding hazards, and searching for hidden items form the basic gameplay loop. Chester One is relatively easy to understand at the mechanical level, making it accessible to players familiar with traditional platformers. "Chester One" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This was at least a genuinely made 2D retro platformer... but genuine doesn't mean good, or even remotely competently made. Before we even get into how bad the graphics are, the overall game design is a sloppy mess, with random death for no reason, an ocean of unfixed bugs and glitches, godawfully bad level design... truly some of the worst platforming has to offer. And it gets worse. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. The graphics here are particularly awful, a blend of garbage pixelcrap with some of the worst "Baby's First Wacom Tablet" "drawings" so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam.
