The original design of the never-before seen point and click adventure is being brought to life after 30+ years in the vault - Beyond Shadowgate! This new PC game has been created by the designers of the original 8-bit hit Shadowgate and a leading 8-bit adventure studio!
With a world that is over five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate captures the same look and feel as the 8-bit console version while including modern design sensibilities. Since the memory and color palette limitations are removed, Beyond Shadowgate is a much longer and vibrant game, with both retro and modern gameplay mechanics that give you the feel of the original! For players accustomed to the NES 8-bit version, the game features XInput controller support. The adventure is also completely playable by mouse and key binds.

Story
35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. In that time, the land of Kal Torlin prospered and the events of Shadowgate were forgotten. But once again evil is stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin.
In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits.
Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.

Having a great experience so far, I am enjoying the similarities of the art and layouts. I thought that the timed events were a great addition that adds a lot to the whole vibe of the gameplay. However, I did note it to be a lot more linear with a bit too much hand-holding, along with back and forth fetching items for people, which can get a little tiresome. There are significantly less 'useless' items that used to be fun as they required a lot of guesswork to figuring them out and if they were to be used at all (some resulting in your demise). Though these may take away from it slightly, I feel it is overall a great and quite entertaining modern sucessor to the original.2 found this helpful
I loved Shadowgate for the NES and this game finally lives up to it. Its got that classic fantasy nerdery that I love. The pixel art is great. The puzzles are good and not too obtuse except for a few but that's expected of any adventure game. You WILL die a lot but don't worry you won't lose any progress. You'll just get booted back to the previous room.2 found this helpful
If you have any interest in all in the classic MacVenture games on NES (or Shadowgate, or any classic point-and-click games), this love letter to all of those is an absolute must-play. Soundtrack slaps!2 found this helpful
This game has a lot of nostalgia for me. It's increased size is great and all the random ways to die are awesome. Only one wasn't predictable so far, but the rest are not so predictable that it diminishes the game. I have no idea how far through the game I am yet, but I haven't felt so stuck yet so that I got too frustrated that I wanted to look up help. The controls on a PC are so much better than the NES. I love jumping in and out for some quick playtime. Quick loading and saving with low hardware requirements makes it great for limited game time.1 found this helpful

I'm a huge fan of Deja Vu (PLEASE REMAKE THIS OR EVEN BETTER, A SEQUEL) for the NES and my only disappointment with this game is that the Deja Vu portal was too short and not enough puzzles for my liking. Otherwise, I love everything about this. This game is like a band that broke up 35 years ago and are now coming back together for one last tour and I'M ALL ABOUT IT
