Myst: Masterpiece Edition

I wasn't sure about going back to the original I had played when it came out. Yet, I ended up finishing the game again anyway.

Myst was always a game I've wanted to play and it's taken me over a decade to get around to it. Well, I finally picked it up during this past summer sale, even though it's only $6 normally, and I found the experience to be entertaining and immersive, but I was let down by the ending (no spoilers). There are multiple versions of Myst, but this is the closest to the original game, though the sound effects and image quality are slightly better here. As Myst does have a story and a bit of lore to it, the lack of subtitles is my biggest gripe with this version. The audio quality isn't the highest, and a lack of subtitles can sometimes make it difficult to understand dialogue, especially in some of the earliest FMV scenes in the game. I ended up having to use a transcript for a good portion to be able to understand cutscene dialogue; the 2021 remake, however, has subtitles, so if subtitles matter for you, pick that version up. Go into this remembering that this plays like a 1990s point-and-click adventure game. It's... I mean, it's OK, I guess. Its legendary reputation mainly tells you that they didn't have much else going on back in 1993. The puzzles aren't amazing, but only a few are particularly obtuse or annoying. The plot is fairly simple (and the ending weak), but at least it gives you something to mull over while you're clicking your way around. It makes decent use of environmental storytelling, too. I can't recommend it as something that you'll actually have fun with, but hey—it's cheap, it's short. If you're curious about it from a historical viewpoint, there's not much to lose.

Myst is a love of mine. The puzzles are hard, the plot is excellent, and you'll immediately want to purchase Riven, Exile, Revelation, and End of Ages to continue with Atrus, Catherine, Achenar and Sirrus (Yeesha shows up later in Revelation)
