SPELLHACK!!, developed and published by Computer Dream, presents a refreshing interpretation of the roguelike deckbuilding formula by combining strategic spell management with fast-paced real-time survival gameplay. Rather than relying on traditional turn-based encounters, the game throws players directly into frantic battles where every decision must be made under pressure. This hybrid approach creates an experience that feels both familiar and innovative, rewarding players who can balance careful planning with quick reactions. Wrapped in a nostalgic retro aesthetic inspired by the 1980s, complete with stylized visuals and live-action FMV sequences, the game establishes a memorable identity that immediately separates it from many modern indie roguelikes. The gameplay centers around an engaging cycle of preparation and survival. During the day, players explore the mysterious Doom City, collecting Technospells, upgrading their Spelldrive, discovering useful equipment, and encountering random events that can significantly influence the direction of each run. These quieter moments encourage experimentation and strategic planning, allowing players to build increasingly powerful spell …

This game has a fun and catchy retro theme mixed with cyberpunk. The tutorial is well done, easing players into the game. The mechanics and UI are all clear and everything is well defined. Game play is fast paced and addictive. Man, I love this game! ...except for the cigarette and ash tray next to the computer. Smoking is nasty. Replace it was a copy of Heavy Metal magazine or something cool that fits the theme.

Not too bad. Fairly short. Don't let my review time fool you, I had the game running while playing other stuff I'm just an idiot. With that said, again, not too bad. I'm usually not into deck building at all, but I like the combat segment enough to offset that. In addition I really like the theme of the game and the aesthetic. It is a little rough on my aging eyes and I could see myself getting eyestrain if I kept playing for too long, but ehn. Really my second biggest complaint is the awkwardness of the controls. It is good the dev was smart enough to support both awds and cursor keys for movement. I can't tell you how annoying it is that retro games seem to obsess over cursor keys for movement. I'm really tired of that. Thankfully you don't have to settle here, you can use cursor keys or awds. My biggest complaint is the story is kinda overall lame. It does finish out, but the ending feels a little phoned in. The game tried to make it feel like somehow it's interacting with you, but it doesn't do it any meaningful way and I felt like it slacked off pretty hard at the end. [spoiler]I suspected the ending would be what it was, but I was hoping that either there'd be some kinda r…
