About Mothmen 1966

At the edge of reality, where nightmare creatures lurk...

November, 1966. The Leonid Meteor Shower.

A young couple, a gas station owner, and a paranormal investigator get caught up in a terrifying conspiracy taking place at the edge of their reality, where nightmare creatures lurk, and the mysterious men in black lie in wait...

Mothmen 1966 is the first in a new series of interactive adventures: Pixel Pulps. Created by novelist Nico Saraintaris and artist Fernando Martinez Ruppel, Pixel Pulps are a fusion of exceptional writing and stunning illustration, inspired by mid-20th century pulp fiction and 80s home computer graphics. The first volume comprises three games: Mothmen 1966, Varney Lake, and Bahnsen Knights.

Mothmen 1966, like all the Pixel Pulps, is made to be played by anyone who enjoys fine storytelling:
  • Unfurl the dark wings of the rich, branching narrative
  • Immerse yourself in the story with its rich, evocative illustrations
  • Decide the fate of Mothmen 1966’s characters in ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ style gameplay
  • Solve accessible brain-tickling puzzles throughout the story

✦ AI summary

Players consistently praise the game's striking art style, atmospheric world, and engaging story, with particular appreciation for its brevity and performance. However, common criticisms include the lack of meaningful player choice despite being framed as interactive fiction, barebones gameplay, and the absence of auto-save functionality, with some finding the writing overly silly and feeling the experience is too short to fully develop its premise.

Mothmen 1966 is a beautiful, pulpy visual novel with some minor gameplay elements added to it. The story is fun, pulpy, and a bit spooky. It leans into the cryptid theme and gets the vibes just right! The 80s style pixel art is stunning and even though the game is set in the 60s, it still manages to help evoke the feeling of a time gone by. It almost feels like stumbling on a random game from your dads collection of floppy disks. On the gameplay side there isn't much to say. There are a few extremely light puzzles and a surprisingly addictive minigame. The story is linear, so choices are more about minor scene shifts or they lead to outright game over screens. On the whole, as someone who doesn't usually like visual novels, I suggest you try it out as your first foray into the genre!

Mothmen 1966 is a tightly focused supernatural adventure that combines interactive fiction, visual novel storytelling, puzzles, and old-school computer aesthetics into something immediately recognizable. Developed by LCB Game Studio and published by Chorus Worldwide Games, it is built around the idea of a playable pulp story, presenting a strange paranormal incident through dramatic pixel illustrations and player-driven decisions. Its modest scale is part of its appeal, allowing the game to concentrate on atmosphere, characters, and mystery instead of stretching a simple premise across unnecessary hours. Set during the Leonid meteor shower of 1966, the story follows several people whose lives intersect during an increasingly bizarre night. A young couple, a gas station owner, and an investigator with an interest in unexplained phenomena become involved in events connected to unusual creatures and mysterious men in black. The premise draws heavily from cryptid folklore and mid-century paranormal stories, but it uses those influences as the foundation for its own compact mystery. Ordinary relationship problems and personal tensions remain present even as the situation becomes increa…
