About Solstice

Solstice is a dystopian mystery thriller about small personal disasters that turn into great catastrophes.

A magnificent city in the middle of a frozen wasteland, cut off from the world by raging blizzards. Inhabited only by a small group of misfits, who either can’t or don’t want to leave for the dead winter season.

When the local madman goes missing, an ambitious doctor on a contract and a mysterious young woman, who arrived with the last dog sled caravan, start questioning the true nature of the city's splendor...

✦ AI summary

Players praise Solstice's beautiful art style, engaging characters, and thoughtful writing, with the story and world-building standing out as strengths that reward exploration. However, some feel the overall package is merely average and suggest waiting for a sale, with comparisons to the developer's other work (Cinders) implying it may not be their strongest effort; the game is also clearly not for everyone, appealing primarily to visual novel enthusiasts.

Solstice is an average visual novel with beautiful art and decent production values. The game takes place in an arctic arcology with some deep secrets. Interesting mix of science fiction and fantasy. The story, plot, and romance options are okay. I definitely prefer Cinders, also by MoaCube, so I suggest playing that game first. Probably only buy this game during a sale? This is a game with alternate endings, and I found a route I was somewhat satisfied with. This is one of those GameMaker Studio games that was part of the HumbleBundle developers tour showcasing the original source code, which could be opened in that game development environment. I expect the files are probably still available somewhere for people interested in a behind-the-scenes look at how the game was made... although I'm not sure if they're directly compatible with the current version of GMS so your mileage may vary. Side note: Despite Steam correctly showing that I have unlocked 9/18 achievements, the intervening years had somehow reset my recorded playtime to zero? I wound up having to leave this game on the title screen for fifteen minutes before the review system would accept my input. *shrugs*

Great writing and characters in this. The world-building and lore are on point and it's fun to explore and learn more about how the universe works. Not a game for everyone but if you're curious check it out!
