Stars Die

Played this one a couple of years ago and it's still living in a corner of my head rent free. Cool trippy retro-style visuals, and an actual cosmic horror plot written by someone who clearly understands what cosmic horror is really about. It's worth replaying for all endings (even the super secret one, although I did have to check a walkthrough for that...)

[b]"maybe the sea will offer the peace i need"[/b] 💖🖤🖤 🟩 some pretty cool atmosphere and imagery 🔷 interesting story but writing is kinda wonky 🔴 needing to go through the entire game to get other endings [b]vibes:[/b] cosmic flesh apocalypse [b]loops:[/b] walking sim with lots of dialog but pretty linear [b]ramblings:[/b] i thought it was neat, has some cool atmosphere and ambience to it. one downside is that it's mostly kind of very linear up until the very end, where it turns into kind of just a "choose your ending" choice at that point, and there's no real way to save at a spot, so in order to get all the endings you just have to keep restarting and speed running through the entire game to reach that spot. it's not a very long game so that's not a huge undertaking, but it is sort of annoying. the writing is also sorta all over the place, the dialog can be kinda unwieldy and clumsy. and by the end of the story it's trying to be very full cosmic and has characters going on about grand ideas and motivations but it hasn't properly developed anything up around it so it just comes off as rather rushed. interesting premise, environment, and characters, but the mechanics make it a slog. The game has several endings and no save system or ability to skip opening cutscenes, which require playing through the entire game several times. Unfortunately, the body of the game doesn't have the replayability that this setup requires. You're forced to go back and forth between a handful of locations, and often then wait for the npcs to catch up to you.

I keep thinking about this game, and it's been over 3 years already. I like it

Visually jaw dropping, and with a mysterious and atmospheric story that grips you from the very second you first open it. A favourite of mine to revisit, and criminally overlooked. Very short, and is a bit tedious to get every ending since there's not really a way to skip things you've already seen, but all and all a very solid game that seriously sticks with you. My only complaint is there being no way to purchase the soundtrack
