About A Circle Among Squares

✦ AI summary

A Circle Among Squares is a minimalist arcade shooter where you control a circle navigating 200 levels of increasingly challenging puzzles to destroy black square enemies while using reflective blocks, teleporters, and other squares strategically to your advantage. With one-hit-kill mechanics, varied enemy types with different movement patterns, and creative environmental elements that can turn enemy fire against them, it's a test of quick reflexes and tactical thinking wrapped in elegant simplicity.

You're a circle. You're the good guy. But you're surrounded by squares. Some are irrelevant. Others are useful and/or annoying. Then there are the black squares. They want to kill you. They are the bad guys. Be a good guy and pulverize those baddies, will you?

Survive and shoot all enemies in 200 levels (or make them shoot themselves). Each level cleared opens the next one permanently (autosave). Enemies come in a variety of types, speeds and action patterns, while other squares do a multitude of things, ranging from reflecting bullets to teleporting you. Enemies are killed with a single hit, and so do you. Failing a level has no consequences. While the first levels are easy and often, very quick, difficulty increases greatly in later levels.

What Steam players say

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the game's fair pricing and solid performance on PC, but find the difficulty ramps extremely steeply with demanding pixel-perfect timing required as early as level 6, causing frustration for some who quit before progressing far. Common complaints include music and sound effects sharing a single volume slider rather than separate controls, and UI elements locked in place that don't scale well despite the game appearing to be a mobile port.

Recommended Feb 1, 2025
Timing puzzler, level 6 out of 100 took perfect timing, and that is just the 6th level. On level 8 after 30m. I quit on level 8 for now because I saw what timing was required and bailed after most of my actual play was solving level 6. The minor bad on this one, music/sound fx are on same volume control, I recommend they fix that and the UI is locked on the screen like the screen shots show. This game looks like a mobile port, played on decent PC in 1440p no problem in Windows 11. Enjoyed and for the price, very fair IMHO.
