About Into the Necrovale

Your fate hangs in the balance as The Stranger, a condemned criminal chosen by the All-Father himself. Preserve this tired world or destroy it, and the choice is yours.
The hopeless, the lost, the drowned and forgotten, all must obey one rule: fight to survive. Generations of unwanted criminals and degenerates lurk in the dark corners of the Necrovale.
The Necrovale is filled with powerful relics left behind by those whose story ended in the depths. Collect these weapons, armor, shields, staffs, jewelry, totems, hats, books, and other tchotchkes as you follow in their footsteps.
Along your journey, you will meet other prisoners. The crimes and failures that brought them to the Necrovale are their own business. Reserve your judgement, however, as you might find yourself depending on these strange and broken creatures to survive.

Got a good set of items early on that let me steamroll through the first few sections. Then about 3/5 of the way in I ran into the Witch's Palace and got stuck. Just a massive spike in enemy damage, health, and mobility. There are definite balancing issues in this game and a lack of meaningful ways to grind up. Except for buying some permanent health upgrades, everything in this game comes from gear. Don't have good gear? You can't progress. Can't get an essential build item? Can't progress. It's a fun game conceptually and I want to keep at it but I've been stuck at this third section with no way forward except grinding old bosses for resources.

I saw the Dev say something along the lines of how he hates the traditional idea of set pieces in other games, where the devs basically make the builds for you, and I see that pretty clearly here. This game has a unique system in that theres tons of loot that you can "Meld" together. You like that helmet you just looted, but you also like the helmet you found a while ago? You can meld them together to get both effects basically being the engineer of your own gear. Eventually, when you get to the end game, you even unlock a 3rd meld. My only real complaint about this game is the "Despair" system. I suppose I get it from a lore perspective? Every time you die, you get 30 despair, and if you die at 100 despair, your character is taken to a RNG selection where you do have a little influence to ultimately select 1 piece of your equipment to discard. However, this whole system basically becomes a non-issue after the first boss, or whenever you get the equipment to make it so getting kills lowers your despair. My issue with it, is that its just a system you either have to force fix, or micromanage by putting on a bandaid for it before 100, its a system that shouldn't have existed t…

A Flawed but Still Intriguing ARPG Firstly, lets hit on the game economy. Gem meta-currency is a real grind; you'll need a lot of it to give to the various NPC's across the game, as well as to unlock new areas. On the flip side you'll be swimming in gear and gold. This is a theme throughout the game; you'll be grinding weather its currency or slogging through levels. Balance, or really the complete lack of will hit right away. Fast ranged weapons completely outclass the majority of other options. Moreover, generally there is a poor tradeoff between melee and ranged; with melee not offering enough upside for the additional risk required. I'm a little surprised the balance is so poor considering the items have fixed attributes. As a result later in the game as your build starts to come together its likely that most enemies (possibly even bosses) will become nothing more then popcorn fodder. On the technical side, the audio has some priority issues with certain player effects cutting into the background audio. Doesn't happen all the time, but happens enough that your gonna notice it. Even with all these issues I still think its a game worth playing. There is just somethi…
