Unconventional vertical shooter which on first try may turn off some users because of periodic non strafing mechanics. As a whole the implementation does make sense and heavily contributes to the depth of the title and it only takes a few minutes of play to realize this. There will be times you need to give up your strafing ability and situations strafing will be advantageous. Don't want to give up your strafing ability then don't but you may find yourself in a weakened or more vulnerable position because of it. Terrific arcade title!

Tough as nails vertically scrolling run and gun. While the challenge is high, the game remains fun and engaging thanks to the fast paced and colorful visuals. This port is surprisingly well made. It offers TATE support as well as various visual filters. I was particularly happy with the excellent CRT option, but PIXEL and STEP are also available. I can definitely recommend fans of old school shooters check this one out. One of Toaplan's best!

A Sweet Piece of Arcade History OutZone was one of the first arcade games I actually managed to beat, alongside classics like Golden Axe. It is a short but wonderful game that really challenges your reflexes, memorization skills, and ability to keep up with its great tempo. For its time, it was fantastic. And honestly, I think it has aged like red wine. It is a wonderful little piece of gaming history from the golden age of arcades. Unfortunately, because games like this were stuck mainly in arcades, many of them never got the chance to reach a wider audience or continue with more stages. Today, we mostly experience that era again through collections like this or emulation. This version gave me a particularly sweet surprise. The arcade version I played did not have the extra stage and boss included here. When I originally beat the arcade game, I would return to Stage 1 with tougher enemies, but keeping all my gear. So discovering that this version actually has a new stage with an even harder boss was a fantastic bonus. If you like old-school arcade games, give OutZone a try. It is short, challenging, fast, and demands that you learn the stages rather than simply react to them. …
