Demons Roots

I play games for the plot, characters, and and the worldbuilding. I generally stay away from h-games because of the poor reputation they have in those area's. I don't expect Elden Ring or Nier Automata levels of worldbuilding or story in a small indie game, but that is what I look for. I was very pleasantly surprised by Demons Roots by how it kept my attention and, most importantly, made me feel human emotions. The story starts rather plodding and stereotypical. It mostly revolves around defeating one dimensional 'mustache-twirling cartoon villains', which generally is not interesting. but I kept going because the characters were interesting and multidimensional. However, As the story progresses, it begins to makes sense why all of these horrifically evil people are the way they are and why they hold power. But it was the characters that really stood out to me. Each person had their own goals and motivations. They join your party because your goals align with theirs, not because you mechanically need party members. By the end of the game, my primary motivation to keep going was for these people to accomplish their goals and live the life they want. More than once I reach…

(and one last achievement) and i just have to say though demons roots has its ups and downs, i feel it is a genuine masterpiece of an rpgmaker game. i'm someone who hates tropes like the power of love and friendship and whatnot what have you. Even so i can tell you with full confidence i feel as though i came out this game a better person than i was before. To start, from prolouge up until the end of the first half of the game, it's slow. rather cut and dry and you might find yourself struggling to keep interest as it's sort of repetetive. Mostly found in the early game but also found late game too, there's plenty of moments where akai likes to point at the screen and spell out moral lessons for you with the writing when you can easily figure it out yourself. This is even prevalent in the bad end mode and definitely earned a few eye rolls from me. However, if you stick with it and continue through the game, the payoff is MASSIVE. lewd scenes aside, this game has one of the best stories I've played in a LONG time. I don't think I'm at the end yet despite the story pretending it's the end, but wow, what a ride it's been. Each of the characters are memorable, unique, and useful. There's a grand variety of locations and enemies, abilities and skills and weapons etc. You'll also be in for some good music too. It doesn't have a real title, afaik, but SBGMv2_02 hits hard every time the one piano riff starts. you'll know what i mean if you play it. 100% recommend this game even if you play the vanilla game, no H scenes. Although, for at least one of the characters who you don't learn about until later, the H scenes adds depth to her story, IMO. I'm not sure how they get around that otherwise. This game's worth far more than $20. Even more worth it if you get it cheaper. What a f---ing gem. I definitely went in expecting far less and was rewarded with peak.
