About Clockwork Owl

Clockwork Owl is a Coin Pusher Roguelite. Use turn-based classic arcade coin-pushing physics mechanics as a means to battle forest critters, while making your way up a tree. Collect a deck of new cogs from random encounters and upgrade your owl at shops to survive this permadeath journey.

Experience the nostalgic bliss of an arcade coin tower game with a twist (and a hoot ^-^).

INVENTORY QUEUE

Build your deck of cogs wisely, they are the only defense against the hoards of encroaching forest critters. Visit shops to buy some wares:
  • Bomb: An explosive that will blast cogs off the edge with ease
  • Health Cog: When knocked off edge, it heals the player
  • Ninja Star: A sharp, quick, high damage weapon
  • Big Cog: A colossal cog which can clear space, when knocked from the board will hit all enemies

SPECIAL COGS

Knocking off these special cogs from the clocktowers trough will reset the cogs, do critical double damage, and give you extra coins.
  • Reset Cog: When knocked off edge, the trough is reset after a 3 second delay with a brand new set of cogs
  • Critical Cog: When knocked off edge, all cogs knocked off the edge for the next 3 seconds do DOUBLE Damage. This stacks for multiple crit cogs.
  • Gem Cog: When knocked off edge, each gem cog reward respective coins: Emerald - 25, Ruby - 50, Diamond - 100

STORY

Time is under attack, and Owls are the sworn protectors of Time itself. The forest critters have laid siege against the timeteller's clocktowers, in hopes to cease time from flowing and disrupt the natural order of change. You, as the chosen guardian, must gather up your cogs and travel through time itself to protect the timeteller's clocktowers of new and old, ensuring the continuity of time's flow.

The game physics are just not where they need to be for a coin pusher, even after the rework. Everything gently tumbles and floats, and you see a lot of cogs landing on their edge and staying there - even if they're on a moving platform. It feels like we're playing with giant blocks of styrofoam, not small metal cogs. It almost feels like everything except the pusher itself needs to be sped up 3-4x. There are four or five cog types available. Bombs don't really create an explosion (like we see in the game trailer), but seem to be more of a vigorous table bump. There are no big, splashy, table-clearing attacks, and no special table-seeding cogs to set yourself up for later. There are some significant bugs as well: as of this writing, the shop feature seems to be broken for multiple players. Clicking "next" on the Tutorial screen fires a cog. I'm hopeful that a physics re-rework down the line might give this title the spark of life it needs. But as it stands, this just doesn't hit the mark for me.

EDIT: A bunch of great changes got made :) Original review below: This game feels unfinished and there are a number of things it still needs: - Coins are too floaty and get stuck on their sides, and in some cases can even fall off the board entirely. - Play area needs to be shifted up a bit so the owl is at the very top; your eyes spend most of the game looking at the coins being pushed, after all. - Music is extremely repetitive and I didn't find it relaxing at all. - There's very little feedback or weight to your actions. Sound design will help here as well, the coins need to clatter and bang, it's a coin pusher, it has to be visceral! The coins need weight to them! - Doesn't seem to be much of a way to build towards a certain thing or synergies with certain items, there are just different coins. Surely there is a ton of design space here that will help marry the Roguelite Broken Build Simulator dopamine rush with the Coins Clattering And Falling dopamine rush. - Rather than having board refresh be a powerup that drops, why not have it be a power you can activate? In the real world you'd just switch tables to something with a bit more coins ready to drop, after all. There is…

Physics are weird, which is bad for this type of game. Way too many of my cogs ended up standing straight up including the large cog that really needed not to do that all the time. I tried using the moving platform to knock them down but they stayed standing. Bombs barely seemed to realize they were on a moving platform and just kept rolling. Also it can be inconsistent, with some throws randomly causing the cog to fly more towards the front of the machine without touching anything if you just click higher on the screen Most of the cog types feel the exact same to launch since they basically are except for some having effects once cashed in leaving them feeling, limp. Didn't even realize at first that the big cogs pierced targets to hit more then one at a time The two special tokens needed explained better. Why do they take 3 seconds to activate if they just spawn a single crit tile or reboot the board? And why isn't the player told their effects? What is a crit token anyways? How does its damage compare to say, a shuriken? Combat has no impact, leading me to barely feel when a cog is launched because there's no sound or visual of you hitting the enemy besides tiny numbers appea…

As someone with 400+ hours in Slay the Spire this is perfect for scratching that rouge-like itch. Such an original idea executed very well with very satisfying gameplay. Like another reviewer said, no better feeling than hitting that perfect bomb and watching everything tumble down.

Clockwork Owl is like the thot daughter you never wanted but the fanum tax makes up for it. Imagine if Skibidi Toilet and Ohio Rizz had a fun, strategic baby, with a splash of baby Gronk. The visuals are bussin, and every coin drop feels like a caseoh fell out of his chair. Despite a bit of a learning curve and some repetitive gameplay, it’s a blast that’s well worth diving into if you’re up for W ratio mayor of ohio duke dennis dangling. NO CAP.
