The Posthumous Investigation

I enjoyed the art style, the plot was pretty good. I enjoyed the unreliable narrator format. However, am not recommending it because of the execution of the time loop mechanics., which is core to the game. I do not mind that I don't get to keep items I pick up after a day, but this game does an absolute disservice to itself because for every repeat action, you have to click through a lot of the same dialogue/reaction. It becomes so tedious, dull and boring that I just wanted to get it done right to avoid having to do re-do something again. If this was addressed, the plot/story would be easier to appreciate; right now it feels like 40% is the actual game and the rest is mundane clicking to get through same inane actions and dialogues to progress.

[h3]Is it fair to complain that a time-loop game is too repetitive?[/h3] Well, all of my emotions are in the first sentence, and honestly, I don't know the definite answer. There are a lot of games that require you to do some actions again and again. There is a whole genre of roguelikes that are essentially some kind of time loop. But those games make the whole idea of replaying the same thing over and over again their key selling point. Why are roguelikes good? Simple: because the gameplay is good. The variety in gameplay, actions, and outcomes makes these repetitive, time-killing games fun. People can spend hundreds of hours there, and it can still be fun! So, we have "variety" as a key ingredient that makes the game interesting despite the cycle being its main premise. Okay. Do we have this kind of variety in The Posthumous Investigation? Honestly, no. The whole gameplay is "point and click". This is not a problem on its own, but 15 loops later, this game becomes [b]"point and click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click..."[/b] There is some variety plot-wise, but the deeper you go, the more Groundhog Day-dull it becomes. Fun gameplay loop, satisfying to play, and cool art direction

this one was fun! i liked the character writing specifically, all of them have really strong visual designs and characterizations, they do also have multiple layers and flaws like every human does. the game mechanic itself is simple, you have one day to question suspects, follow trails and combine the pieces of a puzzle thats larger than i intially suspected (seriously, how many enemies can one man make? apparently its a lot.) after a while the gameplay loop did get repetitive and i found myself skipping through the same few dialogues just to find or ask the one question i still needed to ask to get the final piece of proof. it doesnt help that some of the suspects are only available to speak to to very short/limited times and you might just lose a whole day if youre not careful with your time management. all in all i would understand if some were to be put off by the more repetitive aspects of this gameplay loop. i still enjoyed my time with the game, especially from a visual / character design perspective. and it was a good time-filler post-shift or whenever i was feeling a little bored. :D

I’ll say straight away that this is going to be the most biased review in the world. After letting it sink in for a day, I’ve realised that I’m incapable of being objective about this game. And the thing is… I love it. I really do love it. It’s become one of my favourite games. I can see why some people don’t like it. And perhaps it could do with a couple of improvements. But… IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL! And the characters. Don’t get me started on the characters. They’re absolutely marvellous. To begin with, it would be somewhat inaccurate to refer to this as a mere adaptation of "The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas". It is, yes. But so are the rest of Machado de Assis’s best-known works. Bracamarte and Crispin are characters from "The Alienist", for example. And don’t get me started on "Dom Casmurro". If there’s one thing I love, it’s literature. And, thanks to this game, you’ve enabled me to delve into the books of Machado de Assis. I’ve loved everything I’ve come across. And, above all, what they’ve done with this video game. It’s a real love letter to his work.
