Occlude

Dropping a review because I was surprised that recent reviews sat in the "Mixed" category. From reading the reviews I can definitely see why now. Occlude is a Puzzle game more than it is a solitaire game. At times you know the solution to a puzzle but need to play a game of solitaire (well, their version of solitaire) to get there. At times you will intentionally lose a game of solitaire to confirm you understand a puzzle. Occasionally you will feel like you need to guess (and you probably did at that point), but doing so helps you learn. Once you understand the mechanics of a puzzle, it's more like minesweeper than random - as the developers note within the game every deal is solvable. If you go into Occlude thinking you're just going to play solitaire with a horror veneer you're probably going to have a bad time. If you like puzzles and don't mind a little grunt work to solve them, I think Occlude does a good job of giving you Eureka moments like any good puzzle game should. Last note: I picked this game up after their large update in 2025 which added a bunch more puzzle content. In fact, I would say it's more of a deduction game than solitaire and that's an important thing to mention as it will determine whether you like it or not. It is not a game for casual play. The main mechanic of the game is that you need to discover which card to place last for each suit (each suit has two piles, ascending and descending). The rules start out simple enough, but quickly get crazy. It's even more difficult to discover the rules within the confines of solitaire gameplay and its inherent restrictions. Because of this resetting the board often is a given (and the game tells you as such). I did not end up enjoying the puzzle experience. When I looked up the logic of some of the solutions, I'm glad I didn't spent more time on them. That said, the game *technically* doesn't require you to understand the rules and only offers different endings based on performance. Nifty little game, decent concept, but I feel like this was a 'gamejam concept pushed to the extreme'. I finished the main 'rituals' (levels) and haven't tried the bonus ones yet (I'm not sure if I even will). When I say this is a gamejam designed pushed to the extreme - I feel like the developers did about as much as they could with the concept, but there's not a crazy amount there to begin with. In each ritual you're trying to figure out which card of each suit you add to the pile last. The coins at the top of the board can give you hints depending on a number of things, like the board state or which card you just moved. The lore was interesting enough, but I think it hyped itself up harder than it deserved. 'The game with the potential to change reality' - but in reality, you see nothing change from game to game. Personally I'm trying to get better at puzzle games so I enjoyed it, but needed to use a hint guide (without giving the actual solutions). One of the hidden rules in particular felt particularly mean - I understood it since it was a part of the field I studied, but I feel like the average puzzle/solitaire game player wouldn't have gotten it. A lovely little game if you enjoy solitaire and puzzle games. I really enjoyed it!

A very solid game in the genre of fumbling around in an environment until you figure out the rules. More than once, I came up with an understanding of the rules that was 90% accurate, and it is very satisfying to have mild success with that but greater when you completely figure out the situation. I only have two wishes about the game. First, it would be nice to be able to change decks, especially to one whose suit colors had better contrast then the muddy colors they chose. Even more so, I wish that the story arc of the game was anywhere near as interesting as the lore that you are provided with after every level. The developers clearly had a broad idea in mind about you participating in a high-stakes occult battle for the stability of the world, which makes the actual ending of the game feel like a significant letdown.

If you like Solitaire you will enjoy this game. Otherwise, probably not. From the genre and theme, I was really expecting there to be some exciting "twist." This is a puzzle game combined with Solitaire, with interesting lore. Unfortunately, I don't enjoy puzzles or Solitaire.
