Axon TD: Uprising - Tower Defense is a creative interpretation of the tower-defense formula that gives players far more control over the battlefield than the genre normally allows. Developed and published by Element Studios, it builds its identity around map manipulation, turning the terrain itself into an important strategic tool. Instead of receiving a completely fixed path and merely deciding where towers should stand, players can expand sections of the battlefield with tiles, lengthen enemy routes, connect isolated areas, and, on certain maps, establish new destination points. The result is a game where designing the battlefield can be just as important as defending it. This freedom makes individual matches feel more like evolving strategic puzzles. Creating a longer route gives defensive structures more opportunities to attack, but simply stretching the enemy path is rarely enough. Tower coverage, available building space, resources, enemy behavior, and future expansion all need consideration. A very good tower defense from a small studio, heavily inspired by Defense Grid 1 & 2 while adding a very well-implemented map modification system. My feelings on [i]Axon TD: Uprising[/i] can be summarised as: [h1]Thoroughly good game, lacks that [i]something[/i] to become great[/h1] [i]ATDU[/i] has [b]so many things[/b] going for it: [list] [*]the Greatest Hits of TD Enemy Design, [*]nice spread of towers with some interesting choices in the mix, [*]it's a maze-building game that [i][b]avoids[/b][/i] the pitfall of being forced to spend your money on trash towers and having to wait [i]ages[/i] before you get to the fun stuff, [*]fully-voiced campaign that's decently written, [*]well-thought out infinite mode, [*]difficulty where Normal gives a TD veteran nice challenge already. [/list] But I finished the campaign with gusto, tried the infinite mode, and... never picked it up again. I like it, but I [i]think[/i] I should like it more, I [i]think[/i] I should love it like one of the greats, but something's amiss. [h3]In conclusion,[/h3] regardless on which part of your journey across the TD genre are, you will likely enjoy it, but you may have trouble falling in love.

Standard, good tower defense. Has all the types of towers you expect, all the types of enemies, mazing, etc... it's "standard" and does it better than most games. If you want "tower defense", this is it. Roguelite aspects are a bonus. Mazing is more important than tower choice in many cases. Sometimes it feels more like a puzzle to solve than actual use of creativity, but still fun!

The game is fine, but just wasn't the follow-up to Element TD 2 my friends were were hoping for in a number of ways. Modes that are really interesting to me like survival don't allow for more than 2 players so contributed to this falling off within my friend group pretty quickly. I recommend it for what it is, but only just.
