About HootBox

✦ AI summary

HootBox is a vertical platformer where you play as an owl stacking colored boxes to climb toward the edge of the universe, set against a melancholy and surreal atmosphere that transforms the repetitive ascent into a meditation on finding meaning. Its honest, handmade aesthetic and non-punitive approach to challenges create an introspective journey that embraces frustration and bewilderment as part of the experience.

About the Game

Hootbox is the result of an existential crisis turned into a game. It is a "home-made" vertical platformer where a lack of technical expertise has been replaced by an obsession with pixel art and a constant, lingering question: Why am I doing this?Step into the feathers of an owl who has chosen to be a "happy Sisyphus." Stack colored boxes, defy gravity, and attempt to reach the edge of the universe. Is it frustrating? Perhaps. Is it depressing? At times. But it is an honest journey, created by a single person still trying to figure out a direction—both in the game and in life.Your feedback is the compass the developer is missing.

A Solitary Ascent Into the Unknown

In this vertical platformer with an unusual and vaguely bizarre atmosphere, you play as an owl seeking more than just the summit—perhaps a way out. This is an experience designed to be taken slowly: a "chill" journey through a world that seems to have lost its bearings, much like its creator.
  • Build Your Escape: The core mechanic is simple and meditative. Collect and stack crates to climb higher and higher. There is no rush—only the steady rhythm of your construction in a world that feels suspended in time.
  • A Bizarre and Melancholy Atmosphere: Explore environments that convey a subtle sense of bewilderment. Between surreal encounters and strange vistas, the game reflects an introspective mood, turning the climb into a metaphor for finding meaning amidst life's difficulties.
  • Non-Punitive Challenges: The enemies and obstacles you encounter are not meant to crush you, but to slow your ascent, inviting reflection. Even the Bosses guarding various heights are part of this strange ecosystem rather than mere enemies to be defeated.
  • The Shop of the Unusual: Use what you find to purchase power-ups that make your climb smoother. Every item in the shop serves a practical purpose while adding to the strange narrative of this world.
  • Secrets Among the Clouds: As you rise, you may stumble upon hidden minigames. These are brief departures from the main path—fragments of a larger puzzle that complete the experience of this vertical journey.

A Message from the Developer

This game was born from a moment of personal lostness. It is an invitation to climb, one piece at a time, accepting the melancholy of the path and finding beauty even in the most depressing and grotesque moments.

HootBox is a charming indie climbing game that players praise for its pixel art, soundtrack, and clear passion project status, with a progression system that gradually introduces new mechanics to keep the gameplay fresh. While reviewers note it's a bit rough around the edges, they consistently highlight the developer's heart and soul poured into the experience, with the simple tower-building mechanic becoming increasingly engaging as complexity ramps up.

I have to preface that the dev is a close friend of mine, so the review might be a bit biased. Hootbox is a very cute game: it's not about how big it is or how mechanically complex or polished the gameplay loop can be: it's about the little things that are here and there that bring it to life and the amount of love that is clearly poured in it. The pixel art is very cute, the soundtrack also, the progression is balanced and gets quicker over time with the upgrades in the shop and it's very fun to build taller and taller to see whatever is awaiting at the top of the next level. At the price the game is, it's a steal, and I can guarantee that it'll at least make you smile once, knowing how much of a passion project it is and how far it came since the beginning. But more than that, it'll also give you an actual fun game to pass your time with and to look forward to playing when thinking of what to do next or what secrets or strange things you may be able to find! P.S: The game is updated with new wacky stuff, so it'll be fun to check once in a while to see what's new.

A hand-drawn game about an owl with a dream of climbing as high as he can. It's easy to see this was a true labour of love from its creator. While it's a little rough around the edges, it's overflowing with charm, heart, and personality. webas!

Hootbox is a journey featuring a mix of colors and different gameplay mechanics—a pixel art gem into which the sole developer has poured his heart and soul. The game’s concept is simple: climb higher and higher by building a tower of boxes. Gufo gradually spices up this simplicity with new gameplay mechanics and new items, giving players new and different ways to farm and grind points to reach ever-greater heights. You can see that as the game progresses, it becomes more complex—not only in gameplay but also in its pixel art style: on the lower levels, the art is simpler, while the higher you go, the more complex and polished it becomes. For now, the game is in Early Access, but there’s enough content and challenge to give it a try, especially considering its price.
