Developed by Phantomery Interactive, 1953 – KGB Unleashed is a tense and atmospheric First Person Adventure set deep within the bowels of a Soviet bunker during the Cold War. Players must uncover the dark and horrifc secrets buried within, fighting their own paranoia along the way as well as the possibility of all-too-real terrors within the bunker. Are the voices emanating from all around you real, or just an hallucination resulting from your isolation? Will you manage to escape into the warm embrace of daylight, or will you be trapped within the foreboding menace of the bunker?

“1953 – KGB Unleashed” is based on real projects conducted by the Ministry of State Security of the USSR (the former KGB). During that time they pushed the limits of human endurance, testing for the possibility of telepathy, as well as researching the psychological impact of fear on the human brain. The photo-realistic visual style of “1953 – KGB Unleashed” recreates the USSR of the fifties: the underground shelter’s interior is constructed using real Soviet military plans, and the materials found there are based on historically valid documents.
Explore a hidden laboratory where such experiments were conducted in order to learn the truth behind the terrifying events that led to the closure of the project and the liquidation of its staff. An atmosphere of isolation and suspense pervades throughout, bringing you face to face with your own fears, while the voice of invisible “observer” broadcasts over the internal communications system. The game is atmospheric. I enjoyed playing it. It also reminded me the teenage years of my life. In the beginning, I was able to solve the tasks by myself, but then the puzzles became obscure, and I had to lean heavily on the walkthrough. I bought the game at a 80% off discount, and it is a steal.3 found this helpful
I really liked the menu screen for this game, that was my favorite part. I did NOT like the documents you pick up in this game, for the most part they were really boring. Sometimes the documents were important to progressing through the game though. A lot of stuff you need in this game is hard to find. In one part there are some batteries you need to pick up, but they are tucked on a poorly lit shelve in the background. Whenever dialogue or a cut-scene plays, the protagonist starts looking at the corners of ceiling for 10 seconds, then you have to wait another 10 seconds before you can click anything. SPOILERS: I don't understand why in the end a random bathroom wall collapses and we just walk out of the bunker with a subway token. I think we are supposed to believe the edgy ghost guy over the speaker might have done that but I don't know. The part you have to find an antidote was a cool idea. I finished the game with the help of walkthrough. Although the graphic style is so dull and tedious, and the puzzles are a little bit hardcore because they involve many expertise from multiple fields and many of them are designed with elements irrelevant to each other, the storyline is intriguing. I enjoy reading reports which build a fascinating story. The game left so many mysteries even after playing through. I must discover the truth by searching on web. To conclude, the game itself doesn't offer much fun, puzzles make people even abandon the game, but the story and mysteries impress the player. It's not a game for everyone, but I still recommend it to hardcore players taking interest in electricity, bio-chemistry, psychology, early cold war history and what happend (or rumored) in KGB.
Nothing special, but good
if you want a quick and dirty dose of point and click nostalgia buy it. however be warned there is one puzzle that will probably have you looking up a walkthrough. other than that: its pretty good all things considered. its really trying in ways other point and click games at the time just weren't. sure its not cyan and its definitely no Scratches but its fun and is trying its best. story is not too shabby either. creepy, atmospheric and has its own flavor. I do love a story heavy game, especially when the horror is the most human of atrocities. getting chased by an unspeakble monster doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as uncovering relatively realistic war crimes one might actually encounter on a bad urbex trip. I enjoy this game and would gladly add it to my once a year rotation.
I feel like this hasn't aged well. I simply couldn't get into it.
