1998: The Toll Keeper Story

A way to celebrate the Indonesian Indepence Day... is to play this game on the day and reminisce how that activist kidnapping criminal actually became its President.

It's Papers Please with cars and trucks, minus the pixels and the fax noises for va. It's good but the price is not ok for such a short game.

Gameplay wise it is your run of a mill border inspection gameplay like many other game like it and feels easier, so I guess the unique selling point is the story. Since I was born in the country this story based on I knew why the characters act like this in the game, but I can imagine it is too absurd and sudden for someone who doesn't know the history. Since the narrative demands you to know what is happening in the background. Also the main story is too simple to be engaging, like c'mon pregnant wife in middle of crisis is too sympathy baiting for me. I know it sounds bad and could happen in real life, but its like you could change the main character to orphan kid had to pay for their own bill or lonely grandma forgotten by his family it would still feel the same mediocre story.

1998: The Toll Keeper Story is a small but charming Papers, Please-like game which, as the name suggests, puts you in the seat of a toll station worker. Set in a fictional Indonesia set as also the name suggest in 1998, the story is much more than just checking cars and documents. A financial crisis is happening, violent protests are starting, and as the days go by, the rules become increasingly difficult, with more and more things to check because of it. But the story doesn’t just end there, as you aren't simply a nameless character in this game. You play as a first-time pregnant mother struggling to survive. The way you do your duties, much like in Papers, Please, can have an impact on which ending you get. Overall, the really cool art style does a great job of depicting the late '90s, giving the game a gloomy but charming atmosphere. It's also a well-done women-focused story, which is really fresh in gaming. Overall, it's just a competent and charming Papers, Please-like game, and I definitely recommend 1998: The Toll Keeper Story.

Poor description in daily objectives. How many flyer to hand out per day? and not to mention the contraband list. The game has potential but it look a bit rush and poorly written. Have high expectation for this since it gets positive review.
