7th Legion

[b]7th Legion[/b] is a Strategy game which I really enjoyed in the late 90's. I cannot however recommend this version as it does not run well on modern machines. If the game doesn't start for you at all, try removing ddraw.dll from the game folder.

7th Legion makes its return with a no-frills re-release of the original 1997 RTS. For fans of the classic, it’s a nostalgic trip down memory lane—exactly as it was, with no fresh coat of paint or added features. However, that also means it brings along its fair share of quirks and frustrations. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the game pits two factions—the 7th Legion, the underdogs left behind on an uninhabitable Earth, against the Chosen, the elite who fled to the stars. The storyline is minimal, offering little beyond the intro video, but the focus is on the gameplay itself. Each side features mirrored infantry, but the real differentiation lies in their vehicles and mechs, creating a dynamic combat experience. The economy operates through a unique card system, which, while intended to add strategy, can quickly become frustrating. The enemy often uses cards to randomly and constantly blow up most of your units, making it feel less like a calculated battle and more like an exercise in frustration. It definitely shows its age but it's a good game. Crashes often but it was playable for me

The music is super bad-ass, but the gameplay is really weak. The UI looks bad too. It feels like a cheap copy of C&C. Yes, the very first C&C which came out 2 years before this! To be honest, it's more like a copy of Dune 2 (1992) with the extra ability to select more than one unit at a time (group-select, yeah Dune 2 did not have this). The problem (for the game) is that we can play even Dune 2 in a modern way (with the ability to group-select, higher res., etc.) (Dune Legacy), so there's no chance I want to play a (super-outdated) game like this. I would have not enjoyed this even in 1997! It was an embarrassment even when it came out. In the same year Age of Empires came out. C&C was already 2 years old, as I mentioned. C&C:RA was 1 year old. WarCraft was 3, WarCraft 2 was 2 years old. Dune 2000 and StarCraft was less than a year to come out. These games are in the same genre (RTS) and were the competitors of this game at that time. All of them are better. So yeah, it was a bad game even in it's own genre.
