A Good Deed On Harris Avenue

A Good Deed on Harris Avenue is a “find and use” errand-based game that takes place on a single street with houses and a store. You wake up to a phone call and a request to bring a CD to your neighbor. You complete the delivery, receive cash, and start a cascade of errands. Each building on the street has an item that can be retrieved by completing a task for the resident of a different building. Until you discover the beginning of the trail (the errand that starts the row of dominos falling), you will spend your time circling the neighborhood. I have invested close to an hour in this game. Since there is no explicit save function, I have started over 4 times because I kept quitting before finding the thread that advances the chain of errands. It is possible that an auto-save might be implemented, but I did not reach a milestone that triggered it. I hesitate to be overly critical when a developer has put time and effort into a game. However, A Good Deed on Harris Avenue is not ready for prime time. The navigation is not intuitive. You rotate your character using the D-Pad or A/S/D keys to face a specific direction and then use the “W” key (or D-Pad) to move forward. Turning oft…

A great deal. One of those games that can be beaten in a single-sitting in an evening, like a long drag of a cigarette or experimental film in game form. Excellent vibes. If you're a fan of trading sequences/sidequests from The Legend of Zelda series, this game is basically one of those condensed into a concise and fun package - down to the kooky Zelda-like charm of the residents of Harris Avenue. It's also a narrative/dialogue-focused game which doesn't talk your ear off and says a lot of sweet things without actually *saying* them - it's great! Well worth the price of admission.

It really should be called Shallow: Bare Minimum. I got a laugh out of it for all the wrong reasons. I got it because it looked like one of those "PS1 Like" games made by a very passionate developer... after loading it; this game looks and plays like an awful tech demo for the 3DO. No offense to the developer. This game IMO isn't even worth the $2.39 I spent on it... there are FREE games out there that blow this game away. I can't possibly recommend this to anyone... it's like buying someone's tech demo project they made while trying to learn how to program in college. It holds little to no entertainment value. Again, apologies to the developer for the harshness... no disrespect or anything. We need more PS1 style games... so I'm rooting for the dev to get better. The game was enjoyable, even though I never normally play Indie games.
