About American Patriots: The Swamp Fox

AMERICAN PATRIOTS: THE SWAMP FOX is a first-person shooter set during the American Revolutionary war in November 1780. The player assumes the role of Francis Marion, a true American Patriot who fights fiercely against British redcoats. The troops of Colonel Tarleton are hunting him down in a swamp in South Carolina. In the end, Francis Marion will be known as The Swamp Fox.

Features

 • Beer brewing.
 • 18th century warfare.
 • Cabbage farming.
 • Double flintlock pistol.
 • A roguelike gamemode with procedural swamps, items and permadeath.
 • Are you hardcore enough to get the golden weapon in horde mode?
 • Inspired by the ambush scene from The Patriot.

The roguelike gamemode lets you sleep in a cozy log cabin to restore your health, has numerous gameplay changing beverages in antique Wistarburgh bottles like "Every kill makes you faster", "10% change that redcoats can freeze" and randomly generated labyrinths with five huge swamp levels. You can brew beer by following step-by-step the original beer recipe written by George Washington. Brew a dark and tasty porter with a strong flavor of molasses. Once the beer is ready, friendly bluecoats might more likely join you in battle. You also have a small garden near the log cabin where you can grow cabbages to get maximum health. Hunt down the redcoats!

It’s stable enough and it’s not a mindless asset flip; it knows what it wants to be, and it works towards its own sense of identity. Inspired by a scene in movie-I’ve-never-seen, The Patriot that where, I guess, a lot of British dudes are shot in a swamp, American Patriots drops you in a swamp, gives you a gun and introduces you to a lot of British dudes. You have to shoot them. There’s no enemy variation; Team Britain arrive, resplendent in their spiffy red coats, shuffle forward awkwardly a few steps in your direction, fire the identical single shot rifle every last enemy troop has then s-l-o-w-l-y reloads in preparation to repeat the cycle over and over until they win or they die. Their biggest strength is in their number. They’re infinite. So, how does one lone Yankee stand a chance? The short answer is, he doesn’t. T…
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
American Patriots: The Swamp Fox is a first-person shooter with some light survival elements. It delivers this in a specific historical setting, but given how unrealistic the gameplay is, it’s somewhat confusing what exactly the game is trying to be. First, movement is overly fast, almost to Wolfenstein/DOOM levels. This isn’t automatically a negative, but it makes the game feel like an arcade shooter where you are shooting monsters or aliens, rather than a game set in the 1700s where everyone uses muskets. It just doesn’t make sense given the historical context and feels out of place. The gunplay is rudimentary and by the numbers. There isn’t recoil, but you use a musket so you reload after every shot anyway. It isn’t awful, but it certainly isn’t fun or engaging. Enemies take a single shot, so combat is a constant loop of “shoot, run away while reloading, shoot, etc.”. Some players might enjoy the simplicity, but for me, it got stale very quickly. Visually, the game lacks anything distinctive. The graphics are generic 3D models that have no real style to them. You kil…

Disclaimer: only really played horde mode. It's quite bad because it so badly balanced and the performance gets really low if there are a lot of enemies nearby which is almost always the case in horde mode.

If the developer of this game would update it and make the combat less clunky, show when you damage, and slowed the movement down, this would be one of my favorite games of all time. I'm a huge fan of colonial America in general and The Patriot is one of my favorite movies. The combat just breaks it for me. I spent the majority of my time standing still just to shoot because the sensitivity is so fast. I really wanted to like this game because I'm a history nerd but I can't see myself playing this often as the combat makes me angry. I died more times than I could count because I didn't even know I was being hit by musket balls. All in all, if you updated and re-optimized this game, i'd pay good money for it.
