Blink the Bulb is a spirited retro platformer that takes obvious inspiration from the 16-bit era while adding enough unusual systems to establish an identity of its own. Developed and published by White Sparkle Games, it combines traditional running, jumping, combat, and exploration with randomized elements, collectible abilities, changing environmental conditions, and an imaginative holiday-based universe. Rather than simply recreating the structure of an old console platformer, it uses that nostalgic foundation as the starting point for a broader adventure centered on exploration and experimentation. The setting is one of its most distinctive qualities. The adventure takes place in the Jubilee Realm, a universe created from humanity's pleasant memories of holidays and special occasions. Those positive recollections originally shaped colorful environments and peaceful inhabitants, but darker memories eventually contaminated the realm. This negativity gives rise to six powerful creatures called the Holidaemon, whose influence threatens everything around them. Blink the Bulb is a free 16 bit platformer that goes for a very old school feel while adding a few ideas of its own. I play as Blink, a living light bulb travelling through the Jubilee Realm to stop the Holidaemon from taking over it. The whole setting is built around twisted memories of the holidays, which gives the game a really unusual theme. I like that it is not just another generic fantasy platformer because the holiday worlds give it a bit of personality straight away. The platforming itself is pretty straightforward, but the large open levels give me more freedom than I expected. There are six different worlds to explore, and the levels are not simply narrow paths from one side of the screen to the other. I can look around for items, deal with enemies and work out how I want to move through each area. The day and night system is also a nice idea because it can change enemy behaviour, minibosses, stage mechanics and which items I can find. That gives me a reason to pay attention to the time instead of treating every level exactly the same.
