!!!THE GAME CONTAINS BUGS THAT PREVENT YOU FROM FINISHING IT!!!
I wish I was joking, but after (almost) 7 years since the game was released, these bugs haven't been fixed yet. There are several, and I strongly advise you to do research on how to prevent them from happening and read steam discussions if you do decide to play it. The bug I personally encountered:
you should burn the voodoo doll as soon as you get a piece of black chalk, BEFORE you finish all puzzles at the graveyard/chapel location. Otherwise, they just take away you lighter, and it doesn't let you progress further. This bug happened after I played 4 hours, there were about 20-30 minutes of puzzles left before the game's end. The only solution to fix it, from what I understood from other ppl who encountered it, is to replay the game.
I couldn't finish the game because of the bug, and I won't replay the whole game just to fix it and see the ending, but overall the game is pretty decent. There are several bugs, and it crashes sometimes too (crashed about 3 times during 4 hours for me). The story isn't very interesting, pretty boring. Some puzzles are fun, some are too simple. A decent HOG if you manage to avoid game-breaking bugs. The story follows Jessica and her friends as they visit an old house that she appears to have inherited. But the moment her friends walked through the front door, an evil spirit awoke and imprisoned them inside. Soon after, a wizard emerges and transfers Jessica back in time to locate the magical thing needed to save her and her friends. Beginner mode allows you to play the game with faster hint recharge and marked hotspots. If you want a truly adventure experience, you can go with an expert and look for those scenes on your own. You will not be completely in the dark because the mouse pointer changes as you move over an interesting object that can be examined or picked up. A small criticism is a very small mouse pointer. It can be easily lost in colorful and cluttered scenes. Items are stored in your inventory. Similar to classic point-and-click adventure games, you use things by clicking and dragging them into the appropriate place. The majority of items can be found lying around in the scenes, however some can only be obtained by playing hidden object mini games. It sticks to a time-tested formula. It's okay. Some of the puzzles are a bit obtuse, but most of the game worked fine. The main issue I had was crashing. The game crashed on 5 different occasions out of nowhere. I'd recommend this title, but only on a really good sale. There are much better similar games for around the same price. Graphics lower than standard definition, and so VERY MUDDY. Hints are supposed to help you progress whether that's telling you directly or indirectly what to do. The problem is there's 2 steps and the hint only says the second step, not the first step. It's like if the hint is "feed peanuts to the raven" but doesn't show you how or where to get the peanuts and instead showing where the raven is. Sometimes in other games if you try to get a hint in a very different part of the world map, it'll point you the right place. But not this game. I never use hints in HOGs at all, so trying to use them at all was bad enough.
I thought it was good, I liked the Voodoo theme, and I didn't hit any bugs.
