About Boinihi: The Ki Codex

About

Boïnihi: The K’i Codex is, in the pure tradition of the Black Cube series, an exploration game where solving puzzles requires observation and learning the codes of the world. Created by Simon Mesnard (ASA, Catyph, Myha...) and magnified by an oriental-sounding music composed by Yazorius, Boïnihi has a gameplay never before seen in the series, halfway between Myst-like and traditional adventure games.

Story

"An astronaut has been wandering through space for 4 years, and finally landed on an uncharted moon, where a mysterious hermit used to live alone. Boïnihi was his name, and he was one of the rare survivors of a terrible event known as "Day Zero", which happened long, long ago..."

Boïnihi is an independent and self-funded game, mainly created by one person. It has been envisaged as a 1st person adventure with a hybrid gameplay (3rd person camera). You will go through an exotic story based on the exploration of a faraway moon and the solving of didactic logical puzzles. This game is reminiscent of the Myst series but also point and click games like Syberia, The Longest Journey...

Gameplay

Hybrid gameplay, between 1st person adventure (Myst, Rhem...) and 3rd person (Syberia, etc.)
Please note that a large part of Boïnihi is played with mouse, however moving the character is closer to what you could see in Grim Fandango and so playing with keyboard is mandatory (arrows or WASD).
Visit the regions of the moon of the hermit, take notes on a piece of paper, and solve the puzzles!

Features
 • A new episode in the The Black Cube sci-fi series (ASA, Catyph, Myha...), which can be played separately
 • Visit the moon of Boïnihi (4 regions: Peibin Lake, Library Island, Ailhon Woods and Hydra Crest)
 • Play as a Terran astronaut. Pick up items. Search for clues and solve puzzles to progress in the story
 • 3D character on prerendered backgrounds
 • Around 7~12 hours long (without the use of a walkthrough)
 • Includes 3d animated videos for a better immersion
 • 12 original music tracks composed by Yazorius, instruments with an asian/oriental sound
 • Bonus folder included in the game files (mp3, video, DVD cover, comics...)
 • Starring Klemens Koehring (Dark Nights with Poe and Munroe, JULIA: Among the Stars...) as the voice of the Hero Astronaut and as the voice of Boïnihi

 • Developed with Visionaire Studio engine (Deponia...)
 • Available for Windows in English and French

This is a case of "I really wanted to like this game, but"... Seeing as it only has a bunch of positive reviews so far, I'm going to offer a little counterweight in the interest of balance and those who might be bothered by the same things. I have a soft spot for indie adventures with exploration and Point & Click-style puzzles, a VERY soft spot for edible and medicinal plants (which seemed to get some importance here), and I'm pretty forgiving when an indie game doesn't come across as super professional, so I was looking forward to checking this one out. I didn't find it nice to look at, which is a big minus but no dealbreaker for me. The music was mildly annoying to my ears, but ok. I found the controls a bit awkward. I didn't seem to click with the game overall, but I wanted to give it an honest try for longer. Then the spaceship's AI named "MAIDEN" got a tiny-framed female appearance and started to call the (obviously male) main character "Master", at which point I got fed up. I couldn't find any particular redeeming qualities and continuing would have felt like a chore, so I moved on to one of the other games on my "to play" list. * * * I recommend chill and story-drive…

A beautiful Sci-fi puzzle game with a relaxing pace and a deep story. Boinihi is the fifth opus in the Black Cube series but the first one to be played at the 3rd person. It has an hybrid gameplay where we control the main character movements with the keyboard while the exploration of the screen is done with the mouse as in traditional adventure games (left-click to interact with an item, right-click to open/close the inventory). Pressing the F key also highlights any clickable items on the screen. We start the game without knowing anything, only to understand that we play as a lone astronaut who just landed onto an unknown moon, and that he will have to explore it to uncover and understand its secrets. The astronaut movements feel a bit clunky at first and the interface needs a bit of time to understand it, but after some getting used to, we are free to roam through 4 beautiful worlds that clearly have some Asian inspiration in their design. Paying attention to details, reading everything carefully and taking notes on paper is mandatory to solve puzzles and progress in the game. Helped by the mysterious moon inhabitants and the ship AI, we will find a mysterious codex…

Another "really want to like it but..." It's just not really grabbing me. Coming into the series part way through might not help, althoughI can work around gaps in my knowledge of what had gone before. But the game, I'm just not finding it all that interesting or fun to play.

The game is so fascinating with really good story and quite good mechanism. I really enjoy playing it. I recommend the game to anyone that likes mystery and entertaining game. The puzzles are sometimes quite hard to beat, but if you concentrate and play the game, listen, read notes etc. the story revolves easier and puzzles are solved easier. Nice work!

Boïnihi is a marvelous journey. A discovery. An initiation. Boïnihi is without a doubt the most accessible of the games in the Black Cubes saga. And like every previous opus, it can be played without having played the other opuses. The Black Cubes is the most opened and interactive game's series ever, which can be done in the order you want: over the finished games, the player gradually reconstructs the backdrop that serves as the universe, and can then return to the titles previously played with the newly acquired knowledge of this world if he wants to understand more details. No matter which opus you start or end, therefore, the canvas ends up revealing all its riches. Boïnihi is, of course, the last game created in the saga, but it is still probably the best to start the adventure, while offering to the previous players the last piece of puzzle that leads the Black Cubes in a pure apotheosis. Boïnihi is a cult game that has become essential to the series since it was released. Boïnihi is above all an adventure game. Suddenly, many of the gamers afraid of this category will flee, giving way to reckless players who appreciate various intellectual challenges. But this game offer…
