Players are sharply divided on Boon Boon. Some enthusiasts praise it as a charming retro platformer with engaging gameplay, likeable characters, and unexpectedly heartfelt storytelling that resonates emotionally. However, critics point out significant technical limitations including locked 4:3 aspect ratio and controls, low-quality pixel art graphics, and overall poor implementation that falls short of modern standards for PC games.
Boon Boon is one of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam. This isn't one of the "good" ones, either. It's a simple vertical scrolling puzzle as you must climb to the top of each level while avoiding baddies and obstacles, collect the lollypops and run into your girlfriend to finish the level. The implementation here is garbage tier. The game only displays in 4:3, so presumably they developed this in a cave with a 1990's PC and a 4:3 CRT monitor. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC.5 found this helpful
A Masterpiece in game-making. If you have not played this game, well... you better play it before you pass on, as it is the peak at which gaming will never rise to again. The controls are on point, fine-tuned to perfection. The subtle story will have you in tears once finished. And best of all, the characters. The main protagonist, Boon Boon, is a lovable goofball who will quickly rise to be amongst your favourite characters of all time. I would most definitely recommend this game to every single person on Earth.4 found this helpful
This is one of if not the best game I have ever played, it is a must play, the story ark is incredible, character development is so good it is unheard of. The emotional climax at the end is unexpected but brilliant. Level design is one of the best I have ever seen. The characters are well developed and have many strengths and weaknesses perfectly balanced. I would recommend this game to everything and everyone. A genius game, a hidden gem if you will. I would recommend, must buy.3 found this helpful

Boon Boon is a charming retro-inspired platformer that embraces the simplicity and energy of classic arcade gaming while wrapping everything around an unexpectedly wholesome romantic adventure. Developed and published by Anamik Majumdar, the game feels like a direct tribute to the side-scrolling platformers that defined earlier eras of gaming, where colorful visuals, precise jumps, straightforward objectives, and increasing difficulty formed the heart of the experience. Instead of trying to modernize the genre with cinematic storytelling or highly complicated mechanics, Boon Boon focuses on delivering a pure arcade-style adventure driven by nostalgia, cheerful presentation, and classic gameplay structure. What makes the game particularly memorable is how sincerely it commits to its lighthearted concept. Beneath the pixel-art visuals and simple platforming lies a surprisingly endearing adventure about love, determination, and the willingness to overcome impossible obstacles for someone special. The story centers around Boon Boon, a lovable protagonist who falls deeply in love with a girl named Luna. Unlike many platform heroes motivated by revenge or world-saving quests, Boon Boon’…1 found this helpful
