About Carrion Fields
Enter Thera, a dark, fantasy land roiled by eternal wars among mortal factions and gods alike. No one is ever truly safe from monsters, fellow adventurers, or the inexorable ravages of time.
Make your mark on Thera using your wits, your weapons, diverse schools of magic, or by drawing power from the gods themselves. Write a story for your character and give them life in a vast world over 30 years in the making, filled to the brim with secrets and mysteries that you can uncover and use to your advantage.
Carrion Fields is completely free and run by a staff of dedicated volunteer "Immortals," who act as Game Masters and roleplay as the world's gods. Overhead is covered by dedicated players' donations. No pay-to-play. No paying for in-game perks or cosmetic items. We don't care how much money you have - just how fast you can think and how good your story is.
- Our world is always growing. Carrion Fields boasts hundreds of PvE quests, puzzles, raids, dungeons, and other areas, with more always in the works.
- Carrion Fields features a nuanced and strategic PvP system, including "cabal" factions' never-ending battles for power.
- Players can choose from 21 races, 17 classes, 7 player-run cabals, and numerous unique customization options and opportunities that ensure no two characters need ever be alike.
- Necromancers can become undead creatures of great power: Liches, Vampyres, Wights or Mummies. Shapeshifters can learn to transform into powerful or even mythical beasts. Warriors can gain fearsome skills by specializing in weapons and learn incredible abilities from warrior-monks. Thieves can learn to mix poisonous brews and set traps. Rangers can gain mastery over specific terrains, use archery or travel with beast companions. And much more!
- Compete with other players to discover or plunder powerful limited and legendary items.
- No matter how much power you amass, no one survives Thera. Characters can last for hundreds of hours of gameplay, but all are doomed to die of old age - if they survive that long.
- Role-play is required and enforced in Carrion Fields. Everyone you meet in Thera is fighting their own battle, writing their own story, and hoping, just as you are, to come out on top.

Is Carrion Fields really free?
Yes. COMPLETELY free. There is no pay-to-play, there is no pay-to-win. You can't buy any in-game benefits. Your success is left up to your skill and dedication.
Roleplay
Carrion Fields has enforced roleplay. Meaning you play as your character, not yourself. You may be a righteous paladin annihilating wicked souls from the world, or a sly thief attempting to fence stolen goods - but no matter what you will always be in-character. Carrion Fields aims for an immersive experience that includes PvP (player vs. player) and PvE (player vs. environment) while expecting valid roleplay at all times.
PvP
Want to try your hand at a complex and competitive system? Carrion Fields offers a system of PvP that feels like it is a natural extension of its fantasy world. There are no true safe areas, nobody is completely immune to violence. You might try to stay safe within your class's guildhall, but what if your foe is strong enough to murder the well-trained guild guard?
PvE
The world in Carrion Fields is vast. You might sit in a tavern and drink, discussing stories and tales with your compatriots. You also might leave the safety of the populated cities and venture into vast subterranean caverns filled with unknown danger, or explore lost vaults with puzzling magic, or try your hand at facing the ancient dragons which defend their lairs with awe-inspiring power.
In Carrion Fields grouping up is not unusual, as sometimes it is the only way to survive in dangerous areas.
A completely free online multiplayer text-based RPG game. Experience roleplay, PvP, PvE, and more in a vast fantasy world with in-depth history. Enjoy 21 races and 17 classes in an ever-evolving world.
Carrion Fields is a unique blend of roleplaying and complex, hardcore PvP combat that has been running continuously, and 100% free, for over 30 years.
An unforgiving, text-based world with a supportive community. Join us for a real challenge and real rewards: adrenaline-pumping battles, memorable quests, and stories that will stick with you for a lifetime.

I have been playing this game for years, casually playing a character or two, then leaving for several years, then coming back. It has good design; however, for me (and some other players I know), it has been ruined by some of the admins (Immortals), and this is why I am leaving a negative review. First, I was punished for looting several (IIRC, 5-6 out of 30+) items from another player's corpse because, as I was told, I did it for "O(ut) O(f) C(haracter) reasons." The game rules allow looting, including fully looting all the items and leaving another player completely naked, without mentioning any allowed or non-allowed reasons. My remark that I took 2 items for personal use and 3-4 other items for my in-game friends, who requested me to get some items for them, so both reasons were I(n) C(haracter), was left unanswered. Moreover, a short time later, I received a bullying Discord message from another player who laughed at me for being punished (I revealed myself as a player of that character on Discord). This means that the admin not only punished me for a reason that is not mentioned in the rules, but also told other player(s) about this, which is quite unprofessional. Second, …2 found this helpful
The balance between a lethal environment (full PK from level 10) and deeply enforced roleplaying is what makes Carrion Fields unique. I genuinely haven't found it anywhere else. Most MMOs keep PvP and storytelling in separate boxes. Here they're the same thing. The person hunting you has a character, a faction, a reason — and so do you. Every kill, every escape, every uneasy alliance carries narrative weight because the rules demand it. You can't just gank someone and log off. You have to be someone. The learning curve is real. This is not a game that holds your hand, and stepping into it cold can feel overwhelming. But that's true of any game worth mastering — it's not a flaw, it's the cost of entry. Once it clicks, you stop seeing it as a barrier and start seeing it as the filter that keeps the world serious. What you get on the other side is rare: a living story you're actually part of. Not a backdrop, not a queue for content — a world where your choices accumulate, your reputation travels ahead of you, and the hours you put in build into something that feels like it matters. If you're willing to invest the time to learn it, Carrion Fields will give you stories worth tel…1 found this helpful

Honestly I never got into CF, but MUD's need exposure. It's a good game.1 found this helpful
Could not make it through character creation. I tried twice, the first time the game closed my connection after about 12 minutes. I was actively reading through the numerous helpfiles of the different races, with no long breaks between help files. The second time I got further—this time I made it until the choice for orderly, chaotic, or neutral and the game closed connection on me again. (at around the 11 minute mark) This brings me to another slight grievance I had with the rolling stats system and wasting time. At a certain point in character creation I was asked to keep my stats or continue. It never seemed to give more or less stats, just redistributing them across the various categories (wisdom, intelligence, strength etc.) I picked in my head what I wanted and went through about 5 minutes of rerolling before I got what I thought my warrior should have. This is asinine. It was going to happen anyway, why make me go through that? Instead a player should be allowed to distribute points as they see fit.
This has been my go to for 20+ years for deep immersive gameplay, and adrenaline pumping combat. It's old school, and demanding.
