"Cartoon Network Journeys VR" is not a game. Games need functional gamelike interaction and core loops, which do not exist in this "art experience". In place of being a game, "Cartoon Network Journeys VR" is a software application that presents a mediocre Youtube Video This is a garbage VR tech demo movie bearing the Cartoon Network name, logo and brand, so I'm really surprised they decided to burn their brand to the ground by releasing three short Youtube videos of deplorably bad quality onto Steam Direct. We encounter this non-game junkware on Steam because film school dropouts want exposure and formal art circles aren't interested (because their work is crap), so they upload their Youtube video to Steam because nobody cares about their trash on Youtube. Why is this good for gamers? For those who don't know what defines a game, a "game loop" explains the interaction and feedback a gamer gets while playing a game. An obvious example of a game loop would be in games like Forza, where you drive a car in a circle. If you're faster and more skillful than the other drivers, you get rewarded for first place, then you find yourself back at the starting line for the next game loop…1 found this helpful
This game is short, likely taking most about ~80-90 minutes to complete. Made up of three different "journeys", you play a collection of what are essentially tech demos. They each have a fun and interesting story with a unique visual style, but two of the "journeys" - namely "Beyond Beeville" and "Jest to Impress" - are overly reliant on throwing objects, which is notoriously awkward to do in VR. It would seem even the designers partially acknowledged this as the game will actually engage a limited form of projectile magnetism when throwing said objects. For a game that seems to not have intended play with Index controllers, it controls rather well with no apparent issues encountered during my playthrough. However, keep in mind that it won't display accurate controls in game, instead displaying legacy Vive controls. In general, "Cartoon Network Journeys VR" is an experience that, at its best, is an early but impressive display of the technical capabilities of VR for its time and, at its lowest, is a short but entertaining series of aged tech demos that won't take too much of your time.
3 fun stories, 3 VR games, all in Cartoon Network fashion! Recommended.
Jest To Impress's King Mode singlehandedly made this game super replayable, it's a whole lot of fun
