Cave of Gurg is such a stripped down little game that I was surprised by how much tension it managed to create. I play as a hunter entering a mysterious cave in search of the Gurg, a man eating creature hiding somewhere in the darkness. Instead of giving me detailed graphics or a huge interface, the entire game runs through the command line, and I actually think that makes the experience feel more mysterious. The gameplay is entirely turn based, with every action giving me text based information about my surroundings. I have to use those messages to work out where I am, where the dangers might be and how I can reach the creature without getting myself killed. I liked this because the game makes me pay attention to information rather than relying on visual clues. Even moving around feels like a decision when I know one wrong choice could end the hunt. My equipment is also extremely limited, which makes the strategy more interesting. I have a bow and only a small supply of arrows, so I cannot simply fire at everything I encounter.
