It’s a linear visual novel with interactive code segments, no branching routes or choices, just a straight path through a post-apocalyptic setting filled with emotional wounds, AI ethics, and... coding tutorials. I shouldn't have liked it. I don’t like linear visual novels, and I don’t like coding. But somehow, I enjoyed myself anyway. It’s meant to be an educational game where you learn C# functions. Now finished, can I code? No. Do I know some coding terminology now? Yes. Not a bad place to start if you're even vaguely curious about how code works and learning to do so yourself. Concepts like variables, if-statements, loops, and nested function calls are introduced slowly, in context, with plenty of feedback. You’re not writing 100% of the code yourself, instead, you’re tapping through drop down options and thinking through what makes sense for a single line of code that’s already 95% written. It’s more logic puzzle than blank-slate programming, which honestly works well for teaching and avoids overwhelming you. The relationships, both romantic and platonic, unfurl between those programming segments. I didn’t expect to care about a certain side character, but when the drama f…2 found this helpful
10/10 would story code again. I would recommend for coding beginners to help have a bit of a solid grounding before learning more. It's still fun playing when the coding problems are trivial to you. My favorite part were the logic/math puzzles in-between challenges which I assume were optional. I may have shipped a couple of characters I knew wouldn't end up together and yelled at the story a couple of times... but in a good way.1 found this helpful
Really nice artwork and story! As a programmer, it's fun to fantasize of being in this story where I use my programming knowledge to save the world. I'm currently through the first three chapters (the third chapter was in the demo, so I sped through it in the full game)1 found this helpful
Super fun coding game! I have some experiences in coding before and there were a few that are tricky. If you don't have any, that okay! you can definitely learn the basic concept of C. Beside that I really like the storyline and the romance between the two main characters1 found this helpful
When I was starting to learn C# I looked up various ways to practice and learn. This game was definitely one of the most creative ways to learn. Worth checking out if you're interested in learning C#.
Short version: If you want either a nice introduction to programming and computer science, or are interested in a cute romance, in a slightly dark background world, this game might be for you. If your looking for a challenging programming puzzler, and don't care about a story, this might not be the game for you. I don't write many reviews, but this game surprised me. I'm an avid programming, logic, and puzzle gamer. I love Zach-likes, and games that have open ended puzzle solutions to optimize. Code Romantic isn't that. I don't remember how I got it, possibly a bundle, or one of my several mass purchases of games in the "programming" category on steam. If I'd have known, or noticed, how beginner oriented this game is, I probably would have passed on it. I'm glad I didn't. This game shouldn't be for me. I should have been bored by it. I have a BS in Computer Science, and this game is a very good introduction, but it should have been too simple for me to enjoy. But I loved it. Maybe I'm just a romantic at heart, but the story and art was super cute and I got really invested in it. The world building and backstories are great, too, when you uncover them. The multiple choice style…
