About Colony Cephea
A cartographer on a mission to chart routes to the first extra-galactic human colony discovers more than they intended to about the universe.
This is a short, experimental top-down 2D action-adventure through space with cosmic horror inspirations. As the captain of a refurbished exploration vessel, you won't have many weapons at your disposal. You'll have to find your way through the maze of jump gates to Colony Cephea using only your light and your engine. Collect of the map information to plan a route for future vessels to the nascent colony.
While keyboard and mouse are supported, the intended experience is with a controller.
This game is free-to-play with no in-game purchases and is roughly 1 hour long.
What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Colony Cephea is a short, free twin-stick shooter with an experimental horror aesthetic built around light and darkness mechanics, but players consistently criticize its poor execution across multiple fronts. The game suffers from unclear storytelling, underdeveloped visuals that feel dated, and a confusing narrative with random elements that damage immersion rather than enhance it. While some appreciate the weirdness and smooth controls, most feel the game is a mediocre tech demo that fails to justify its horror premise or explain its own world coherently.

"Colony Cephea" is a weird tech demo of a game, it's basically a ripoff of SpaceWar! (the primitive video game from 1962), but with a (bad) plot... you're exploring some other galaxy or whatever. What do you do in the game? Apart from just flying around in a basic SpaceWar!/Asteroids ripoff, you plod through the "horror" narrative with lighting/darkness mechanisms as a crux of the game. But the true horror is that someone thought this would be okay to launch on Steam in such a poor state. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs to pretend they're mobile phones. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because somethi…1 found this helpful
I think the use of light and dark was meant to be suspenseful. It was irritating.1 found this helpful
Interesting, short, WEIRD, not too difficult "sort of twin stick shooter". I played with a controller, and the controls were smooth, but I had a couple of times where I ended up out of bounds somehow, and had to restart from a checkpoint (which are pretty plentiful). Worth checking out, for free, why not?
this game is mediocre, giving it a recommendations for achievos (super ez to get honestly) this game suffers from poor execution and unclear story (something about the journey and how taxing on the mind it is) jump cuts do not help, i honestly have no clue what's going on when i'm in that random green beam matrix area, nor rest of the game it has the horror title, although not scary, and the enemies that chase you seem random, like what are they, sentient dust particles? same with the eye, not explained well imo obstacles and walls also don't make sense story wise, lots of game devs add random stuff for the sake of adding stuff, and it takes away from the immersion (altho there's not much in this game if we're being honest) personally, i think this had a lot of potential, but fell short by a considerable margin, still keep your head up through, game development is pretty hard and this seems like a "foot in the water" game, so lots of more room to grow in the future! it's free so play the game, (30 mins at most) i also found a bug when you press ESC after pressing NEW GAME when the screen is black, which would soft lock you to the main screen
