GnollHack

In the current times when so many scammers try to sell their games as "roguelike" only because you constantly lose and restart, it is great to see games such as this one on Steam -- a variant of the classic roguelike NetHack, that is free (just as NetHack always was) and in which you do not have to restart when you die (just like you never did have to in NetHack). There should be more! NetHack is one of the most important early roguelikes, a 2D immersive simulation that eventually evolved into complex roguelikes such as ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, and Caves of Qud; and also games such as Minecraft (and I think "imsim" games also took inspiration from it). GnollHack is a variant of NetHack -- some things have been changed, so you do not get 100% genuine NetHack experience -- but I think it still keeps the spirit and the great things people love about it* while being much more approachable to the players today (nice graphics, clearer and more fun casual modes, mechanics explained in-game rather than by reading the manual, etc.). As far as I understand it is named "GnollHack" because it adds a gnoll player race, but that does not matter, you can still play all the original races. * unless…

The right way to experience nethack again in modern time, no question about it. GnollHack stands out from the countless hack variants for all the better reasons, tiles? Check. Beautiful art? Check. Completely voice acted? Check. An HUD so simple for a trad RL standard that even my dog could understand & play? Check. And all of that for FREE and i would not mind pay for it, especially when you see, even here on steam, low effort copy paste already seen and played a thousand time RLs. You have my respect devs, never asked a euro ONCE and look what they delivered.

Higher quality then 99% of the bloated steam store products. Just make sure you disable all the AI trash.

If you want the true classic Hack / Rogue experience it does not get any better than this. Dripping with Nostalgia but not too nostalgic with the introduction of modern elements. Dev works so hard on this updating constantly. I cannot recommend this game enough. 5 stars *****

This was my first experience with NetHack and it's very approachable and easy to understand! I'd also like to say that I appreciate what the association behind the developers are doing Good job! :D
