GRIMWAR is a compact first-person action game that combines fast movement, precision platforming, magical combat, and a grim fantasy atmosphere. Developed and published by BookWyrm, it places players in the role of the Thaumaturge, a spellcaster trapped within the mysterious GRIMWAR. Following the death of the Archmage, what initially appears to be an opportunity for freedom instead becomes a dangerous journey through a twisted tower filled with monsters and supernatural threats. The narrative is intentionally straightforward, providing enough context to establish the setting without interfering with the game's emphasis on speed and mechanical execution. Movement is one of GRIMWAR's strongest qualities. Players are expected to jump, slide, and run across walls while navigating environments that frequently turn traversal into a challenge of its own. I love how the final(?) build came out! Gametesting this was already really fun and the finished game is even better. I really hope the OST is out there somewhere to listen to. I appreciate that with the high paced gameplay there isn't much punishment for dying, so you can really throw yourself into it. Can't wait to see what else Bookwyrm makes.

In the same vein as Into the Pit, Wizordum and Arkos with one exception, the hit detection and aiming is awful. Mobility is nice and feels similar in terms of wall running to turbo overkill. The respawns/retry is merciful at least. It's a passable version of those games at best Score- 6 out of 10

GRIMWAR is a fast little fantasy shooter that I found much more enjoyable once I started getting comfortable with its movement. I play as a spellcaster trapped inside a dark tower after the Archmage falls to the power of the GRIMWAR, and my goal is to fight my way out. I liked the combination of first person shooting and platforming because it gives the combat a much stronger sense of movement than I expected. The spells are the heart of the gameplay. I have several different magical attacks available, and each one can be used in different ways depending on the situation. I enjoyed experimenting with them because the game encourages me to think about both attacking enemies and using magic to move through the environment. It makes the spells feel like more than ordinary weapons. Movement is probably my favorite part. I can jump, slide and wall run through the tower, and the levels are designed around keeping me moving. I liked the feeling of chaining movement together while attacking enemies because it gives the game a nice old school action shooter energy. Staying mobile is not just useful for looking cool.
