About Haunting Memories
You play as a middle-aged man struggling with mental health. He is an artist, specializing in oil portraits, but has not gotten any jobs in the last year. He has recently divorced his wife and she has taken their young daughter and moved out of the house, since he can’t take care of himself. His mental health is worsening since he became alone in the big mansion. To deal with his inner “demons”, he tried to seek help in the mansion's library, where the previous owner left a large collection of occult and spiritual books. This put him on a path toward ritualistic sacrifices, contaminating and blurring his memories, and releasing various creatures into his home and mind.

Haunting Memories is a budget indie horror game that borrows heavily from asset stores, resulting in generic presentation that lacks originality despite some decent visual polish. Players praise the creative puzzle design and platforming attempts, but complain about unclear objectives, obtuse puzzle logic, technical issues like broken voice acting and non-looping audio, and frustratingly difficult jumping sections that detract from the experience. "Haunting Memories" is, yep, yet another of hundreds, if not thousands of Unity asset flipped first person horror adventure games infesting Steam. There's a little bit of bespoke code and artwork in this one but not nearly enough to differentiate it from all the other ones. Wander around a bunch of spooky Unity assets. Solve some puzzles (maybe, if they work)... it's been done hundreds of times already, many better than this. The game graphics look better than you might expect, but that's just because it looks like some or all of them are "borrowed" from asset stores or wherever. Gamers can tell... and it comes across as insincere. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Pros: - Platforming addition was neat Cons: - Flashlight is not bright enough - Music doesn't loop - Platforming was a little too tricky/confusing at the part where you have to climb up - Puzzles are a little obtuse - Not really scary except for the final jumpscare at the end and when the music is working during the platforming up section - Voice acting cuts out halfway through reading a note/page1 found this helpful
This is probably the first free indie horror game that I didn't like much. I was more frustrated than having fun or getting scared. Most of it did not make any sense. Maybe add a tutorial option. Hardcore players can disable it and players like me can enable it for help. Since it's a free game, I'll thumb it up but if I had paid any amount of money for it, I'd be furious. That said, there is definitely potential: Great game design, good sound effects, attention to specific details. I am kinda hopeful for the next game.
