About Help! I'm Turning Into A Mermaid!

Hunter is having a very rough week. They've just started a new career as a police officer at the Axon City Police Department, except they've been trained as a conflict de-escalation officer and aren't allowed to carry any weaponry. This has not gone down well with their partner Ember, a fire elemental who usually solves problems by chucking a fireball at it and cleaning up the mess afterwards.

If workplace drama wasn't enough, the city has become embroiled in a massive conspiracy involving corrupt government officials, a cult of mysterious witches and an army of militarised pirates who want nothing more than to reduce the city to a a smoking pile of ash.  Oh, and Hunter also appears to be slowly transforming into a mermaid! Will Hunter be able to work out what's going on with their transformation before it's too late and they wind up stuck as a woman forever? I mean probably not, if you've played any of my other games you already know the answer to this question, but maybe they'll find a way back to their old self! There's a first time for everything, you never know!

Features
  • A massive full length story across 10 chapters, with a script length of over 350,000 words.
  • Solve riddles, combine inventory items and interact with complex mechanisms in over a dozen interactive puzzle sections insprited by classic point and click adventure games.
  • Romance one of four love interests, including a catgirl scientist, a male catgirl, a completely different steampunk catgirl scientist and a fire elemental (who is also sometimes a catgirl).
  • Alter Hunter's alignment on the mutually exclusive Cute/Sexy spectrum to unlock different outfits and change how they interact with characters.
  • Work the trade-in counter at Zara's Games, or cook food at Soupa Noodles by playing in-depth job simulators. Can you differentiate the real games from the bootlegs, and can you cook four meals at once while an impatient manager yells at you?
  • Manage a Coffee Shrine franchise! Assign staff members to tables, renovate your store, and scour the city and complete bonus objectives to hire new characters to work at your store.
  • A stand-alone title set in the same universe as Max's Big Bust - A Captain Nekorai Tale, Alluna and Brie, Max's Big Bust 2 and My Mad Scientist Roommate Turned Me Into Her Personal Robotic Battle Maiden?!?
  • This game was designed as an entry point for new players, and knowledge of previous titles is not required to enjoy Help! I'm Turning Into A Mermaid!

You will turn into a mermaid during the underwater section of Chapter 2. After Chapter 2 is completed, more changes will occur. Turning Mermaid is a point click story game about a pacifist police officer that moves into the Australian city of monster girls and humans. After meeting your girlfriend Ember and a little girl named Kitty, you discover the culture of this unusual new world and learn about a war between pirates and witches. Solve puzzles and take on part-time jobs to earn money. Make new friends and go on exciting adventures. Have fun under the sea!

Disclaimer: I don't think the game's title is accurate, I do not believe it accurately represents the overarching story/gameplay as it'd lead someone to believe it would. Despite the above, HITIAM is still an excellent experience in many regards for someone looking for a TG/TF/TSF experience on the less serious and more fantastical side. The music hits (tho can sometimes feel repetitive due to a game environment where you can spend quite a bit of time in one area with one track or the mall area in the freetime sections due to the amount there) and especially the finale pieces. I don't even know any Renpy games that actually have a finale like this one. It's kind of crazy but on the flip side, there's not much else. My main point of comparison for this game is fellow TG renpy game, Student Transfer, which runs a gamut of quality but I would say has managed to use small sprite animations (such as angling a sprite down to reference picking something up, or small movements in similar regards) to better immerse the player into the game. It's such a contrast to not see these consideringly minor animations vs. the entire mini-games, UIs and other things done that make this game stand ap…

Despite having issues with a select few puzzles and my many presentational criticisms, I had a wonderful time with Help! I'm Turning Into A Mermaid. It's confident in its absurdities and eccentricities, committed to being a truly ridiculous adventure game, and is a captivating continuation of its creator's curious little universe. Pretty much everything I liked about Snell's prior games has been refined here, enhanced by a decade of fresh experience, and I think he delivered something special here. The sixth entry in Lached Up Games' Axonverse series, and certainly the most polished so far. UI, soundtrack, puzzles, art, everything is top notch for what it is. Thought it can serve as an entry point for newcomers, I would heavily recommend playing some of the serie's previous games before starting this, however.

If you're somewhere in the ven diagram of interest in: - A visual novel with puzzle elements. - Monstergirl TGTF ecchi comedy. - Interesting characters and worldbuilding. - Australian setting. - Don't care about small bugs and art ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Let's face it, you've either bought this already and the previous games in the series or you've just discovered the series and you're about to buy the whole set and watch the dev. If you hit more than half of those criteria, give this game a shot. It's a charming game that pulled me in and made me want to 100% it.
