About Hop Step Sing!

Background of Hop Step Sing!
Hop Step Sing! is a coming of age success saga about three young girls who leverage VR technology to ascend the ranks of the idol world. Since their debut in 2017, they have made waves across multiple platforms, including six VR music videos, the Nico Nico Live Stream show "Hop Nama," and a comic series.

Their inaugural VR live event, "Hop Summer 2020," garnered widespread acclaim from fans in Japan, China, and North America. Owing to its immense success, a second event, "VR Live Hop★Summer 2nd," was held in 2022 to celebrate the 5th anniversary of their debut.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the artistic effort and charming hand-holding interactions, with particular praise for the beautiful art style and soothing music, though opinions on the song itself vary. The main criticisms center on the steep $12 price for only 7 minutes of content, the limited 180-degree perspective that reduces immersion compared to full 360 environments, and the lack of English subtitles for Japanese dialogue, making it inaccessible to non-Japanese speakers. Some players also express discomfort with the nature of the experience given the character's young age.

It's not the catchiest HSS song but I got to hold Shikiri's hand so it's automatically the best VR music video of theirs to date! Shikiri #1! One minor criticism is that I wasn't a fan of the shadowbox style environments. You only get to see a small patch of environment in front of you which isn't all that immersive. I like that every new HSS music video tries something new so I appreciate the effort but I much prefer full 360 environments.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
I have to admit, I never would have bought this with my own money. It's a 7 minute long 180 VR mostly cinematic music video. If you're into J-pop or K-pop you may enjoy this music video. I do think it's overpriced for what it is. I did feel creepy holding this virtual girl's hand though (she's 16 per the dev). Maybe it's alright if you're a young teen and have never touched a girl before. There's some other very basic interactions. You can also use a camera if you want to take photos. It looks nice. The artist did a good job with the different environments. It's all in Japanese I believe. $12 USD for a 7 minute experience does seem very steep though to me, especially since this isn't a major recording artist or hit song so it doesn't seem like a licensing issue. Again, recommended only for fan of this series or this type of music. Rate ?/10. Sideways recommendation. It's fine for what it is if you're into this stuff (I'm not).
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Hop Step Sing! Shikiri Shiishiba - By My Side is a paid VR music video with some vr interactions. It worked on my Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded good, was not understandable. The voice over are in Japanese and there is no subtitles that i could see. The UI and instructions was in English. Like seven minutes of content. This is a 180 degree CGI animated video. Maybe buy this, if you like Japanese anime music and girls. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. Totally stoked to have got the chance to hold hands with Shikiri. At first, I was a bit bummed out by constantly waking up to find she's not there, like it's all just a dream and you never really get to go on a date with her... But then, there's this one time you wake up and she's right there, with the dog, sitting by the sliding door. That scene is just the best, a real "good morning" moment. Sadly, that's a level of fantasy we can't pull off in real life. But hey, the game does a killer job of making it feel almost real. It's a trip that sticks with you.
