About Impasto
THE GAME
Impasto is a first-person horror adventure game inspired by the works and legacy of Francisco Goya, the revered yet tortured Spanish painter. Set within a world irreversibly altered by his fraying sanity, the player must use both stealth and wits to survive.
This is a student-made project created by undergraduate students at the University of Southern California in collaboration with students from Otis College of Art and Design, and California State University Fullerton, as well as volunteers from around the world. A full list of credits can be found in-game.

THE STORY
"To my dear Mariano..."
A mysterious letter of inheritance. A dark and foreboding manor. Grim and disturbing figures painted upon the very walls. A swirling canvas beckoning you to step closer, through the black ocean of paint into a world that's lost all reason.
Follow the path of Mariano Goya as he enters the dark and twisted Painted World of his grandfather, the famed and tortured artist Francisco Goya, in order to uncover his secret legacy. Plunge deep into the tragic fall of one of history's greatest artists and come face to face with his darkest creations brought to life.
Meet the distorted denizens who reside within the paint, navigate through the shadowed streets of a town brought to heel by the brutal inquisition, and explore the ancient ruins of a forgotten old god. You must evade the Painted World’s many dangers, solve its puzzles, and uncover its dark secrets, in a journey both to return home and to discover what could give birth to this land of nightmares.

Players praise this game for its compelling atmosphere, striking visual presentation, and engaging story focused on artist Francisco Goya that inspires deeper interest in the historical figure. The light gameplay blends walking simulation with forgiving stealth and platforming sections effectively, though some find the stealth mechanics underwhelming and note it can be shallow in exploration. Technical issues including bugs and occasional softlocks detract slightly, but most players feel the artistic ambition and high production values make it a worthwhile experience, particularly for those in
This game was actually pretty amazing. I've played way more than my fair share of this type of game, and a lot of the time I almost have to force myself to finish them, either due to difficulty, some kind of jank, or just plain boredom. With this game, I found myself quite invested, and actually *cared* about finishing it, and seeing how it ended. It plays very well, and unlike most walking sims, this one actually has a (tiny) bit of platforming, and of course, stealth sections. Normally, I HATE stealth games, but this game is very forgiving with both checkpoints, and enemies that aren't too bright. It really helped to move the game along, there were only a few segments that I had to repeat, and most of those were due to my own stupidity. The thing that really made this game stand out were the visuals. It is very stylized, and is meant to look like you're "playing a painting" so to speak, and pulls it off quite nicely. This is DEFINITELY a Goya themed game. If you like horror/stealth games, and particularly if you are a fan of Goya, you really need to check this one out. A playthrough only takes an hour or so, and it's FREE.2 found this helpful
An excellent indie horror. Well done!
The stealth is eh, but the atmosphere and look is great! I recommend looking more into the history of Goya after playing this one... because it kinda only scratches the surface of that old, tortured man.
I thought "Sure why not?" and yeah, it is pretty cool.
WHEN THE IMPASTO IS SUS!! Wonderful game. Light on gameplay, but heavy on visuals and story. I got softlocked at one part but it's okay. I really, really love how this was set up to be an interactive Francisco Goya exhibit in some parts, before turning into an exploration (however shallow) of the troublesome times that fed into his art. It makes me want to read more about Goya and understand what he was about, and I feel like that was the intention. Being a student project, it is a little rough around the edges, but ultimately really high quality effort, and everyone involved should be extremely proud of themselves. Love it!
