About In Orbit
In Orbit is an interactive virtual reality experience made with data from NASA's Earth Science satellites.
What if you could step inside the unseen phenomena of our planet?
What if your curiosity could transform the world around you?
In Orbit transforms data collected by NASA’s “Eyes on Earth”—the satellites relaying information about our climate, oceans, and soil from thousands of miles above our heads—into a multisensory, interactive experience that celebrates the marvelous complexities of our planet and our drive to unravel them.
By creating a delightful way for everyone to have a dialogue with earth science data, In Orbit hopes to provoke a renewed curiosity about our planet, a passion for its infinite wonders, and a deeper connection to the only home we have.
In Orbit is a collaboration between MAP Design Lab and Microsoft, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The Huntington Library, and Composer Shane Myrbeck.

"In Orbit" isn't a game, it's an art exhibition that's been dumped on Steam, presumably because the local art galleries took out a restraining order on the "artists" who had no other choice but to pay Valve $100 to dump this on Steam. This art exhibition has the player view a bunch of particles in a VR space, and they can wave their controllers around to disturb the particles. That's it. No game, just particles. I'm not even sure this qualifies as "art"... it certainly isn't a game. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true intera…3 found this helpful
In Orbit is a free VR experience. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Has three short narrated modes about 3 different subjects, with the same experience. The experience is that You are surrounded by light particles that can be move by your controllers, maybe making a noise as you do it. Very trippy. There is nothing for you to learn here by the data, it all makes a sphere of light particles around you. Try this for a short VR trippy experience, but there is not much else to gain from it.2 found this helpful
In theory, this is a cool idea. Realistically, this isn't an experience I'd recommend someone try even for free. I think the experience fails at its goal of teaching the user about the data it presents. If it were you very first VR experience, moving around the particles would probably be cool. Otherwise, I had basically experienced everything this had to offer in 5 minutes.1 found this helpful

Very well done game. Super immersive and relaxing. I would recommend it to anybody new to VR or to anybody trying to relax.
