Interloper takes the familiar foundations of real-time strategy and reduces them to a remarkably concentrated contest of territory, movement, and anticipation. Instead of building enormous armies, maintaining complicated economies, or gradually destroying an opposing base, the central objective is to claim control of the battlefield. Matches are deliberately brief, generally designed to conclude within five minutes, but their short duration does not necessarily mean that the strategy is simplistic. Developed and published by Monogon Games, the game succeeds by removing much of the administrative complexity associated with traditional RTS design while preserving the satisfaction of outthinking another player. The territorial system is easily its strongest characteristic. Victory comes from expanding your domain and maneuvering in ways that eventually restrict and corner the opposition. Because controlling space is more important than simply destroying units, every movement carries strategic implications. Interloper is a really interesting little strategy game because it takes the usual real time strategy formula and cuts away almost everything that normally makes an RTS feel complicated. Instead of building a huge base, researching loads of technology and spending ages preparing an army, I am dropped straight into a small map and have to take control of territory before the match ends. The whole thing is built around speed and positioning, with matches designed to last around five minutes. I like that because I can understand what I am doing almost immediately, but there is still enough going on for me to make mistakes and improve. The biggest thing I like is that I am not actually trying to destroy an enemy base in the normal way. The goal is to claim the map by controlling territory, which makes movement and predicting what the enemy is going to do much more important. I have to think about where I can expand, where I might get cut off and how I can surround areas before the other side reaches them.
