KYOTO TANOJI QUEST approaches role-playing from an unusual direction, replacing imaginary kingdoms and monster-filled landscapes with the streets and shopping districts of Kyoto. Developed and published by Media Impact Co.,Ltd, the project is essentially a small interactive exploration experience built around Kyoto City’s Tanoji area and twelve local shopping streets. Its intention is not simply to entertain but also to introduce players to the atmosphere and character of these real-world locations. That cultural focus gives the game an identity of its own, although its limited and unfinished nature prevents the concept from reaching its full potential. The experience revolves primarily around walking through the represented shopping areas, meeting characters, having conversations, and working toward a higher score. Calling it an RPG can create expectations of combat, equipment management, character statistics, branching quests, or extensive progression systems, but those are not the main attractions here. KYOTO TANOJI QUEST is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel JRPG construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog. Like all JRPG construction kit "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This is an abandoned Early Access attempt to fill out templates in RPG Creator to make a simple "adventure" game set in Kyoto, and this looks nothing like Kyoto (at the very least Kyoto isn't a bunch of pixelcrap). It's unfinished, and wow, RPG Creator really is 10 times worse than RPG Maker, isn't it? And RPG Maker is one of the worst things to happen in gaming, so that's quite an achievement. As with all RPG Creator games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development.
