CHARACTERS
Rin Akinashi (Voice: Cyclamen Kaori)
Itsuki’s long-time acquaintance and fellow classmate. A paragon of perfection with good looks, exemplary behavior, and excellent grades, she is popular with boys and girls alike at school.
However, this is merely a mask, hiding the cunning schemer she really is.
Despite a wealthy upbringing, she has an extreme attachment to money, earning a fortune working with Hina to operate a large-scale business of her own.
Until now she has operated from the shadows, but now she takes her place in the spotlight as Itsuki’s partner.
Hina Yorozuya (Voice: Suzu Sazanami)
Kotoko Teshigawara (Voice: Ion Momoyama)
A student in the grade above our protagonist at the same school.
Though her father is the boss of a crime syndicate, Kotoko still has a sense of what is just and right.
Although shaken upon learning that the Umon-kai is not on the side of justice, Kotoko joins forces with Itsuki as she follows what she believes to be the right path.
Currently the outward face of Itsuki’s business, she also acts as a deterrent and negotiator in dealings with other organizations. In the end, she casts herself into the maelstrom alongside Itsuki and the others as she seeks to take control of the Umon-kai and impose her own vision of justice and righteousness.
Meryl Hathaway (Voice: Nene Arisu)
Often found accompanying Kotoko, this girl is a member of an overseas Mafia syndicate.
Originally tasked with watching Itsuki, she found her goals aligned with theirs and now works with them to achieve her objectives.
Her slight build and aloof demeanor give her an air of fragility,
but in times of crisis, she reveals skills that are anything but ordinary.
Tatsuya Yorozuya (Voice: Ii Kinniku)
Hina’s older brother.
A student at the delinquent-filled so-called “Badman Academy,” he is also the leader of DREAD.
Thanks to Itsuki negotiating on his behalf, the debt Tatsuya’s parents owed to the Umon-kai was written off, leaving him free to cooperate fully.
He and his associates in DREAD help with the running of Itsuki and the gang’s club.
He sees Itsuki as his friend, and Itsuki trusts him in return.
This time, Tatsuya has resolved to stand by Itsuki no matter what, as they push forward to bring the Umon-kai to its end.
Luca (Voice: Sara Ayumi)
An executive in the foreign Mafia syndicate that employs Meryl.
Despite her easygoing demeanor, there is always a dangerous gleam in her eyes.
She has a weakness for food, and delights in sampling the diverse culinary offerings of Japan.
Shoji (Voice: Sho Sakuma)
A teacher at Badman Academy, Shoji is a regular customer of Rin and Hina’s business.
With strong connections to other regular customers, he actively cooperates with Itsuki and Hina.
Despite his “unusual” preferences, he is a good person at heart.
Shoji is seemingly well-known among wealthy circles and is accordingly well-connected.
Goro Teshigawara (Voice: Gunso Hatoman)
The leader of the “Umon-kai” syndicate and Kotoko’s father.
Itsuki Ninomae (Voice: -)
The protagonist of this series.
By chance, he creates a digital drug video which leads him into business with his childhood friend, Rin.
With the help of Hina, Kotoko, Meryl and all his allies, he steels himself to settle the score with his arch-enemy, the Umon-kai.
STORY
Itsuki has his NEST. But what did he gain—and what did he lose—to claim it?

After countless twists and turns, Rave is now a massive success, generating an immense amount of profit.

This review is divided into two parts: my thoughts on Liminal Border Part 4 specifically, and then my thoughts on the Liminal Border series as a whole. [h1]Just Liminal Border Part 4[/h1] I've seen some disappointment with this episode specifically, but honestly, I still quite liked it. The best way I can describe it is that I thought Episode 1 started on the path to perfection, Episode 2 was near perfection, Episode 3 was actual perfection, and Episode 4 was not quite perfection. Episode 4 had a lot of shoes to fill. I thought Episode 3 was the most consistently enjoyable, with easily the darkest cliffhanger in the entire series—one that, while simultaneously depressing, was also kind of exciting in a way, making me eager to see where Itsuki and his newfound family crew could go. Episode 4 takes a different approach from what I, and likely many others, expected based on the hype-filled ending of Episode 3. However, I would say I quite liked how Episode 4 turned out as a whole, even if it focused heavily on the consequences of, well, basically the entire story. Talk about a misleading description. The page unfortunately makes Criminal Border seem like a nukige, when it's in fact one of the best stories focused on underworld crime and its consequences. Kazuki Fumi took some dares when he wrote 9-nine, but the guy has balls of steel. Out of close to 100 visual novels I've read at the time of this review, which one takes the most gambles? It's Criminal Border, no two ways about it. Truly, the most insane things that a writer could dare to do was done in this series. Pure shock, thrill, and fantastic writing make Criminal Border one of the best things I've experienced. It's chillingly smart. What a scenario, to have the characters throw themselves deep into the underworld where escape doesn't come easy. It's not something you would expect from Purple software, given how wildly different it is from their other works, but that's another special thing about them. All of their games seem to have a message, either subtle or one like a bright, summer blue. There is no release from crime, and it's a self-serving beast that consumes itself, like the characters in this story. Too expensive for the very limited arts and CG's.... was very looking forward to this game, but kinda disappointed...
