I'm writing this as a writer for Fuwanovel, but my opinions are my own. Last Resort is a short VN about self-isolation and the need to move forward. It shares a similar message with No:Worse, which I also reviewed; however, this story is much shorter and, even though it felt just as rushed and barebones, it still managed to portray a nice enough message. The writing was clearly in need of editing and polishing, and I'm sure there would be enough people to help in VN communities, so I'm always sad to see so many Russian devs go this route. It makes the writing awkward and, thus, the story feels sloppy and messy, like an amateur project. The soundtrack was quite soothing to listen to, despite its lack of variety. However, the visuals feel cheap and generic, though I'm sure that was not the intended result. It just feels like "look at these kawaii anime girls!" and maybe I'm just a 23-old hag that doesn't understand today's moe standards. The story itself, however, was decent enough. Though the writing made it hard for me to get through it, I came to enjoy the final message and the w…2 found this helpful
A hidden gem held back by it's length
I should start off by saying that i was very pleasantly surprised with Last Resort, so much so that it has earned a spot among my favorite VN experiences of all time (with emphasis on “experiences”, I’ll go into more detail about this later on) and exceeded my expectations that were set from other reviews.
The Good
The biggest praise i could give to this game would have to go towards it's excellent writing, that, despite it's short length, managed to convey the exact emotions it aimed for with such accuracy that it made me sob a few times, and even made me take a break to recollect my thoughts, despite not being the kind of person that’s usually affected by games to such a degree. It’s a shame too, because I feel that a lot of people might’ve misunderstood the developer’s intentions and attributed that to the writing being “bad”. It’s kind of hard to explain stuff like that without making them feel like a “to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty” type of situation, but bear with me. At the end of the game, you receive a note by the developer stating, among other things, that “
Ev…1 found this helpful
Last Resort, developed and published by Aleksey Izimov, is a small-scale visual novel that builds its experience around introspection, regret, and the lingering weight of past decisions. Rather than presenting a fast-moving or plot-heavy story, the game takes a more reflective approach, following a protagonist who finds himself overwhelmed by a series of personal failures and emotional setbacks. Academic struggles, strained relationships, and pressure from those around him gradually push him toward a moment of crisis, setting the stage for a narrative that explores what it means to look back on one’s life and wonder how things could have been different. The structure of the story is one of its more notable strengths. Instead of unfolding in a straightforward, linear fashion, the narrative moves between different points in time, weaving together memories and present-day events. This fragmented approach allows players to slowly piece together the protagonist’s situation, revealing how his past choices have shaped his current state. It creates a sense of discovery, as each new scene adds context and emotional weight to what initially seems like a simple premise. While the branching p…
6 euros for 15 minutes? Thanks but no thanks...
Even though this game took me only twenty minutes to finish, I really liked the story a lot, it really resonated with me and is super relatable, amazing art and pleasant music. The voice acting was good but I turned it off because I'm not a Russian speaker but I could tell it was good voice acting. Pros: Beautiful Fun No Wasted Words Satisfying Game and Great Achievements Cons Short No English Voice Acting (for me) 9/10! If it was a little longer with more fleshed out endings, this would be perfect! But in and of itself, it's a wonderful game!
