MONITOR: The Game takes a simple surveillance concept and turns it into an intriguing narrative experiment where listening is far more important than traditional action. Developed and published by DNT Games, the game casts you as a disgraced journalist placed in front of six monitors connected to audio bugs inside a retreat known as the Lynx's Crown. Your mysterious Client has given you a straightforward assignment: discover what happened to the CEO of Dolos Pharmaceuticals, listen carefully, learn everything you can, and most importantly, do not interfere. Predictably, that final instruction becomes increasingly difficult to obey once the lives behind those microphones begin to feel personal. The gameplay is essentially a point-and-click narrative adventure built around observation. Each of the six monitored rooms carries its own pieces of the larger story, while five fully voiced characters provide the information needed to understand what is happening. MONITOR: The Game is a strange narrative game that puts me in the role of a disgraced journalist who is sitting in a room with six monitors connected to a place called the Lynx's Crown. My job is basically to listen to what is happening through audio bugs and work out what has happened to the CEO of Dolos Pharmaceuticals. The important part is that I am specifically told to listen and learn without interfering, which obviously makes me want to do the exact opposite. The whole setup is simple, but it gives the game a nice feeling of curiosity because I am constantly hearing things that make me want to find out more. What I like most is how the game handles its characters. There are five fully voiced characters, and each of the six rooms has its own story going on. I am not walking around a huge world looking for clues. Instead, I am sitting back and listening carefully, trying to understand the relationships between the people I am hearing and deciding when I should actually interfere. That makes the game feel closer to an interactive audio drama than a traditional point and click adventure, and I think that is where most of its personality comes from. "MONITOR: The Game" is an interesting narrative story, one of those "job simulator deduction" games where a story is revealed to you through snippets of footage and other artifacts. You might be familiar with "Her Story" and this is a bit like that... and like "Her Story", the presentation is a bit poor, to the extent it's a deterrent that caused an otherwise potentially viable game concept to fail to meet any notable level of success. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game.
