About Moonatees

Moonatees is now free! Thanks to everyone who supported us by buying the game!

Moonatees is the most realistic VR space manatee simulator*. You play as a freshly recruited, clumsy manatee in a zero gravity playground. You face mundane tasks and an incoming asteroid that you have to beat without opposable thumbs.

"Manatees in space is a hilarious concept" - Chris Avellone, Fallout 2 Game Designer

Features

  • Wacky physicks - Unexpected and humorous situations!
  • Two-flippered grabbing - No opposable thumbs in the way!
  • Virtual Reality - Trick your brain into believing you are in the game!
  • Zero gravity - You are free to go in any direction like in an ocean!

We are an indie team of students and graduates and this is our first published game with zero budget. In testing we have observed that it takes roughly 1,5 hours to explore the play area thoroughly for a player who hasn't played the game before. The project was started in Oulu Game Lab in January 2016.

Nausea warning: You can move freely in 3D space which can cause nausea. You can reduce it by avoiding strafing and adjusting the settings in the menu.

"Moonatees" is more of a VR tech demo than a game. The premise is, well, as the blurb says, you control a manatee in space and have to bash stuff around to save yourself from an asteroid, etc etc. The developers here once more failed to understand the very important and basic premise of VR... if the only thing cool about your product is VR support, then your product is not cool at all. VR aside this fails terribly in comparison with other games, from the cel-shaded looking low poly "art", weak premise, lack of polish, and poor gameplay. This features fairly low quality low poly 3D visuals which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and it's clear the developers behind this didn't understand that. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent…

It's age is definitely showing as with many late 2010s vr games, but I think this is still worth giving a shot. It does have actual physics, and though the movement is incredibly cumbersome and strange, it works within the context of the game and makes for a funny experience. 6/10
