About Open Roads

One fine fall day, Tess Devine and her mother, Opal, discover a cache of old notes and letters carefully stashed away in the attic of their house. Hints of deep-rooted family secrets, decades-old burglaries, a lost treasure somewhere near the Canadian border... What they uncover suggests a much darker mystery, best left well enough alone.

But that’s not going to happen.

In Open Roads, Tess and Opal embark on a road trip adventure to explore a series of long-abandoned family properties, unearthing the past. They’ll search the ruins of these places that hold buried memories, things Opal has tried for years to forget. And in this search, they'll discover not just the truth they've been seeking, but each other.

Featuring star performances by Keri Russell (The Americans, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker) and Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Uncharted 4).

Features:
• Experience the story of Open Roads as 16-year-old Tess Devine, on a road trip with her mother to discover what has been left behind in evocative places forgotten to time.
• Bask in classic road trip vibes as you chill in the car en route to your next destination, fiddling with the radio and chatting with your mom.
• A groundbreaking art style melds detailed first-person environments with beautifully hand-animated characters, bringing the adventure to life.
• A unique and engaging interactive dialogue system moves the narrative along, exposing character flaws, secrets, and buried truths.

Open Roads is primarily a narrative-driven game that explores the bond between mother and daughter. It also touches upon themes of generational trauma. It was a beautiful and relatable story to experience. The art style was lovely—featuring 2D characters like Tess and Opal set against 3D environments. The voice actors did a great job of bringing the story to life. It’s a fantastic game that you can finish in a single evening.

So... Open Roads - the game I really wanted to enjoy, but unfortunately I did not really. To preface, the game is really short, which is not necessarily a bad thing if handled well, but important to note nonetheless. I really did not spend 5 hours on this, I fell asleep once with Steam Deck and had the game running in the meantime. I would say 2-3 hours were more fitting and I am definitely the kind of player that checks everything and interracts with every object I can find. Which leads me to the second issue. 2-3 hours were spent on this with me being the type of player I am. Pretty sure though you could finish this game in less than an hour, much less if you could sprint in it. The gameplay works in a following way: you explore a location where there are roughly 60 interractable objects. 10 out of them start some sort of a short monologue or quip by the MC. 6 start a conversation with her mother, 3 move the story forward in some way. The rest you pick up, rotate, put back down, that's it. With the rehash of the animations of the two characters during conversations it very much feels like a visual novel kind of game that tries to pretend there is a gameplay to it. Again, nothin…

I understand the mixed reviews. I enjoyed spending time in the world but it was way too short. I totally expected us to fly to Nevada and go looking for treasure with Dad after the Mom storyline ended. Very strange how short it was. Overall it felt like it needed more fleshing out but the visuals are great and I appreciate how much of the world is interactive.

Uncovering years-old family secrets leads to a heart-warming mother-daughter adventure. Static cutscenes are a drag in an overall fine game.

Not the greatest, but i've seen worst. Great Mom daughter story about deception and complication in relation. Not very long but liked the experience. Did worth it on sale. 7/10
