EpicDream have big plans. They concluded their time-bending Game of Fate trilogy late last year with a story packed full of permutations. While not quite perfect, its ambition cannot be denied. Patriot Memoirs has similar strengths, with a remarkable branching narrative and great romances. And without the confusion of time-travel, the story holds a better tone. Beginning in 1939, you play as an undercover Chinese agent planted at an administrative office under Japanese control. Your goal is simple: kill a senior Japanese official. But when is the best time to strike? As you help allies, side activities crop up to keep you busy. The story is more like the day in the life of a spy, rather than an action thriller. This makes sense given the romantic interludes, but it did need a fraction more tension and spy-craft. Many threats are conveniently eliminated, often as a scapegoat, which is a little too easy. The advantage of this is that the funny scenes fit better with the grounded tone. Romance is widespread and high quality. Not all five main love interests are on equal footing. Veteran actress Zhu Zhilin is usually good, but her character, Zhao Shuying, is a petulant child. Yang …

Although I am still playing through the game and haven't explored all the story branches, Patriot Memoirs has already shown its distinct strengths and flaws. EpicDream clearly had massive ambitions for this title, but the execution creates a noticeable mismatch with initial expectations.
Production Quality & Acting
Visually, the game is highly impressive. The use of a film grain filter combined with neon lighting beautifully captures the atmosphere of the Republic of China era, giving it a premium cinematic feel. The acting is generally solid across the board, with the villains and two of the female leads (Mu Jianqiu and Deng Jiaru) standing out in particular. Their subtle expressions and emotional depth add a lot of weight to the characters.
Narrative & Branching Design

The game was marketed as a tense, 1939 undercover spy thriller. However, the actual experience feels much closer to a historical romantic comedy. The pacing in the early chapters is quite slow, focusing mostly on running errands and building romantic relationships. The espionage elements feel thin, lacking the genuine life-or-death tension you'd expect from a spy story.
On the brigh…

One of the most boring FMV games I have played in terms of plot. Thankfully there's an option to speed up the cutscenes. The main thing that turned me off was the overwhelming presence of Texas hold 'em minigames. I DESPISE card games and the fact that I kept getting the worst cards didn't help either. Oh and you'll have to replay through pretty much the whole game to get 5 or 6 of the non-ending achievements.

EpicDream has ambition, last year they released 3 games, and with every game they overthought the story more than the last. This year it's only 1 so far, and all of that overthinking went into this one; this game may have the most complicated branching I've ever see. 100% this game was a grind. If you only play through this game once, it's just a 7/10. I wish that besides the complexity, they'd kept the story a little more linear, because some girls completely disappear if you don't choose their route, and every one of them has a completely different branch, you need to replay the game to really feel it. The poker mini-game is painfully slow, you need to exploit it somehow to 100% the game, and even then, it'll take a while. I wish they'd just let Nakamura speak Japanese. it's half Japanese, half Chinese, and the Chinese dubbing was so bad it was out of sync most of the time. Same with the protagonist, I like the actor's voice, so it's a shame they dubbed over him. The ending is underwhelming. I wish we could have gotten a romance ending with some of those girls. But I enjoy 100% this game.
