Pepper Odyssey

Having played around in this world for a little bit, I must say I'm intrigued. I never play RPGs, and I seldom do point-and-click-type things, but I found the surreal old-school aesthetic charming enough to draw me in. I am undoubtedly terrible at the game but I think if it looks like your thing, you will probably enjoy it!

This oddball survival-lite adventure is slow-paced and a bit grindy, but in a zen sort of way. The gameplay loop mostly consists of exploring the different areas of the island to gather currency and supplies while making your way towards one of the game's multiple endings. The island isn't large and you'll be seeing the same locations frequently, but it's less about moving constantly forward and more about deciding what to explore and when, based on your current supplies and needs. Combat is frequent and dangerous. Enemies can be defeated either with raw violence or with dialogue, which takes the form of reading poems, screeds, and textbooks to your opponent. I found this to be the more reliable approach, since your gun and knife will often miss, but you'll need the right literature on hand. Your approach to combat also influences your reputation, which will determine which of the game's factions will give you their endgame quest (if you decide to approach them at all - there are other endings as well). Will update when I'm further in, but this is stunning so far. Beautiful handmade art and mystery. I've yet to use poetry correctly yet, but that seems true to life.

My dear friend and I came across Pepper Odyssey while scouring the depths of Adventure Game Studios late one evening. Intrigued by its bright colours and whimsical title, we bought the game and began playing it together. Well! We were not prepared for how many hours of perfectly pigment playtime we were soon to be delighted with. From the midday heat rising off the smooth glass doors of the famous LUX Hotel, to the cool waters of the evening swamp, we explored, read poetry, and chose sides. The multiple endings of this journey were moving and well earned by our trusty coward, and it was with some sadness that we bid farewell for the final time. Still, there is always the feeling that more awaits across the cerulean sea. Suffice it to say, Pepper Odyssey has found a place in these players heart(shards). Five stars!
