About Wayward

Wayward is a challenging turn-based, top-down, wilderness survival roguelike.

In Wayward, there is a large focus on simulation, exploration, and discovery. There are no classes; there are no levels. Progression of your character depends on individual skill and stat gains by your interactions with items or objects in the world. You are free to play and explore the game in any fashion you wish.

Wayward is a traditional roguelike, meaning it has random environment generation, (optional) permadeath, turn-based gameplay, grid-based movement, complexity, non-modal interactions, resource/inventory management, and more. As such, Wayward is similar to games like UnReal World, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, or Dwarf Fortress.

Some of Wayward's key features include:

  • Sandbox survival game mechanics mixed with roguelike gameplay.
  • Over 750 items to craft, discover and interact with.
  • Deep, multi-faceted skill system with over 30 skills.
  • More than 60 creatures and animals to combat, harvest, or tame.
  • Iterative game design and community feedback driven with transparent development.
  • Online multiplayer with optional PVP mode.
  • 35+ hours of content and gameplay before reaching the "end-game" with supplemental content requiring hundreds of hours.
  • Infinite procedural generation with five island types featuring unique content for each biome.
  • \
  • Optional permadeath (hardcore), or respawning (casual) modes.
  • More than 40 milestones to unlock that provide unique gameplay modifiers.
  • Ability to rollback to previous versions or play the latest development build of the game before public release via Steam.
  • Choose from the following game modes: hardcore, casual, challenge, or custom.
  • Day and night system with temperature effects.
  • \
    • Character customization.
    • Dynamic reputation and difficulty system.
    • Play in turn-based (default), simulated turn-based (multiplayer only), or real-time modes.
    • Modding and Steam Workshop support with extensive development tools.
    • 18 custom music tracks.

    ✦ AI summary

Players praise Wayward's deep crafting systems, polished interface, cozy atmosphere, and excellent value at its price point, with working co-op multiplayer that enhances the experience. However, the game struggles with onboarding—the overwhelming menu depth and lack of a proper tutorial frustrate newcomers, causing many to give up before discovering the satisfying complexity beneath the surface. The endgame content is also noted as underdeveloped, though players acknowledge ongoing development.

If your favorite part of survival crafting is slow progression, lots of work to build useful products, and perpetually organizing 1000s of fiddly items in not enough chests, you'll love it. The interface is much more polished than Unreal World and it has multiplayer! Co-op works well. Turns only happening when one player moves feels great. There's some slowdown and desync disconnects for the non-host, but it hasn't been too bad. At $8 it's very underpriced.

I'm really enjoying this game playing mostly with a mouse. I'm at 7 hours and it feels like what I like with Don't Starve which is simple on the surface but so much depth to explore. Unfortunately I'll say I didn't feel like I fully understood how to tweak the controls right until 4-5 hours in. I think the game gives too much depth in the settings up front, like which tools to possibly use for which task to do automatically before moving on to the next decision tree. It's great once you get it, but settings at that level would be better being in an "advanced" menu for these things, and have it simplified by default. Again, I'm glad I held out because I can tell its a great survival craft game, but I think a lot of people will give up on reading all the menus before that point. Beyond that, the game is a steal at $8 if you're not turned off by the slow curve to really understand everything. Editing after my ~13 or so hours: I'm not seeing any late game challenge. So I made the boat and explored around and found the world more limited than I expected. I expected something like Don't Starve or Valheim has where you encounter tougher enemies I wasn't ready for and there's …

Pretty decent 2D roguelike/craftlike. Worth it if you like survival games. Endgame could be more fleshed out but I think the devs are working on it.

Wayward is a survival roguelike developed and published by Unlok that combines deep crafting mechanics, procedural exploration, and unforgiving wilderness survival into one of the most detailed sandbox survival experiences available on Steam. Inspired by traditional roguelikes while modernizing the formula with extensive simulation systems and open-ended gameplay, the game throws players onto isolated islands where every decision matters. Rather than guiding players through scripted objectives or cinematic storylines, Wayward focuses entirely on experimentation, adaptation, and learning how to survive within a harsh and unpredictable environment. The game begins with a simple but effective premise. Players awaken stranded on a procedurally generated island with almost no equipment, limited resources, and no clear instructions about how to survive. Hunger, thirst, injuries, weather conditions, and hostile wildlife immediately become major threats. Unlike many survival games that simplify resource gathering into repetitive routines, Wayward turns nearly every action into a strategic choice. Gathering food, crafting tools, building shelter, lighting fires, and exploring dangerous ter…

Just got this game recently because a friend gifted it to me, and honestly I've been enjoying every moment of it. The music is very nice, the vibes are cozy, and this is officially one of my new favorite survival games, I wish I found this sooner.
